Digimon Survive Release Date Officially Pushed to Next Year

The distinctly uncommunicative developer has spoken, but it’s bad news for the followers of Digimon Survive.

Announced in July 2018, Digimon Survive was initially set for release in July 2019. It was then delayed to a 2020 release window, but has now been put back to a 2021 release date.

The game being developed by Witchcraft and published by Bandai Namco has been the subject of a great deal of speculation purely because of the silence from its creators. Still, there is at least news to confirm that the Digimon project is alive.

Here’s what we know now following the official release date announcement from the team behind Digimon Survive.

Digimon Survive release date delayed to 2021

In a statement posted by Digimon Games from Bandai Namco, Toei Animation, and the producer of Digimon Survive, Kazumasa Habu, the game’s release date delay was officially revealed.

In the statement, Habu explains that “current world events have shifted our development timing, and we have made the difficult decision to push Digimon Survive’s launch to 2021.”

Being a new and ambitious concept within the Digimon game series, some feared that the delays were due to the studio needing to pivot or scale-back their plans.

Luckily, Habu appears to have put those fears to bed, for now, saying that they’re continuing to “work to create a fun and engaging tactical RPG along with a memorable story.”

Followers of the game had hope that Digimon Survive would still launch this year, with a January 2021 release date shown on the Toei Animation site being taken down once news outlets caught wind of what looked like proof of a delay.

Of course, it turns out that a delay to 2021 will now be taking place, but the release date almost certainly won’t be in January 2021.

When will there be more Digimon Survive news?

We know a fair bit about the gameplay mechanics, story, characters, and themes of Digimon Survive, but there should be more details on the way next year.

The statement posted by Habu states: “We will share some exciting updates for Digimon Survive in Spring 2021.”

It’s been 17 months since Habu released the Digimon Survive Dev Diary video, with a Spring 2021 date for more details set to make it almost two years between significant communications.

This is the game that the Digimon franchise hopes will break significant ground in Europe and North America, similarly to how Monster Hunter World was specifically created to bring the long-running Capcom series to the western markets.

So, they naturally want to release a fully polished, fully realised, working product to the market – which is to be commended.

Digimon Survive is now penned for a 2021 release date, still in line for a PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC launch.
