FIFA 20 Wonderkids: Best Portuguese Players to Sign in Career Mode

Still led by the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo, will any of these wonderkids from Portugal eventually take his place?

Powered through the 2016 Euros by timely goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Ricardo Quaresma, and Renato Sanches, Portugal had to make do without their talisman for much of the final. Against the heavily-favoured young-guns of France, an extra-time strike from Éder proved to be the difference-maker.

On top of that historic triumph for Portugal, the nation has also placed third in the World Cup (1966), and the Portuguese won the inaugural UEFA Nations League.

Still playing, Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the nation’s greatest ever player, but the history books of Portugal are filled with all-time greats. The likes of Eusébio, Luís Figo, Pauleta, Fernando Couto, Bruno Alves, Rui Costa, and Mario Coluna set a lofty bar for players looking to be Portuguese legends. Now, we look to the current top young talents of Portugal.

There’s a full slate of all of the best wonderkids from Portugal in FIFA 20 at the foot of the article: those with the highest potential overall ratings feature in the main body of the article.

Choosing FIFA 20 Career Mode’s best Portuguese wonderkids

The most important aspect considered when picking the best Portuguese wonderkids in FIFA 20 Career Mode is the potential overall rating.

Those that feature in the body of the article have the highest POT, with the others listed in the table at the foot of the article having a potential rating of at least 84. All players in the article are 22-years-old or younger at the start of FIFA 20 Career Mode.

João Félix (OVR 80 – POT 93)

Team: Atlético Madrid
Best Position: LW, LF, CF, RF, RW
Age: 19
Overall/Potential: 80 OVR / 93 POT
Value (Release Clause): £25 million (£67.4 million)
Skill Moves: Five-Star
Best Attributes: 86 Sprint Speed, 84 Attack Positioning, 83 Agility, 83 Reactions

With Antoine Griezmann making his long-touted switch to FC Barcelona in the summer, Atlético Madrid decided to pull the £113.4 million trigger on João Félix. For SL Benfica, Félix demonstrated great skill and poise for a teenage forward, notching 20 goals and 11 assists through 43 games.

In his first season for Atlético, injuries have hindered the Portuguese wonderkid a bit, leaving him with a tally of four goals and two assists in 24 games. He has already played six games for the national team.

With a potential overall rating of 93, Félix is one of the most highly-rated wonderkids in FIFA 20. Considering the Portuguese frontman’s potential rating, his release clause of £67.4 million is rather cheap.

Félix boasts a four-star weak foot, five-star skill moves, 86 sprint speed, 84 attack positioning, 83 agility, 83 reactions, and 82 dribbling – all before his 20th birthday.

Francisco Trincão (OVR 73 – POT 88)

Team: SC Braga
Best Position: LW, LM, RM, RW
Age: 19
Overall/Potential: 73 OVR / 88 POT
Value (Release Clause): £7.5 million (£20.1 million)
Skill Moves: Four-Star
Best Attributes: 83 Curve, 80 Acceleration, 80 Composure, 80 Dribbling

Given a few cameo appearances last season, Francisco Trincão has worked his way into being a regular in the SC Braga starting XI.

From the start of 2020 to the second week of February, Trincão started five of the six Liga NOS games for Braga, netting thrice and tallying an assist.

Only rated 73 overall at the start of Career Mode, Trincão doesn’t have too many favourable attribute ratings outside of his 83 curve.

Trincão can still prove to be a dangerous substitute, though, thanks to his 80 acceleration, 78 sprint speed, 78 agility, 76 reactions, and 80 dribbling.

Gonçalo Guedes (OVR 83 – POT 88)

Team: Valencia CF
Best Position: LW, LF, CF, RF, RW
Age: 22
Overall/Potential: 83 OVR / 88 POT
Value (Release Clause): £31 million (£67.5 million)
Skill Moves: Four-Star
Best Attributes: 91 Acceleration, 90 Sprint Speed, 86 Dribbling, 85 Shot Power

Now 23-years-old, diminutive winger Gonçalo Guedes has already featured in over 160 games in his time playing for Paris Saint-Germain, SL Benfica, and Valencia CF.

Having played 22 games and scoring six goals for Portugal already, Guedes is living up to his wonderkid billing, but a serious ankle injury has held the winger to a mere ten games so far this season.

At the start of FIFA 20’s Career Mode, Guedes is already a worthy starting XI player, with a rating of 88 POT to encourage you to keep him in the team.

Guedes is particularly potent in FIFA 20 due to his speed, boasting 91 acceleration, 90 sprint speed, 82 agility, 83 reactions, 81 ball control, and 86 dribbling.

Rúben Dias (OVR 82 – POT 88)

Team: SL Benfica
Best Position: LCB, CB, RCB
Age: 22
Overall/Potential: 82 OVR / 88 POT
Value (Release Clause): £24.5 million (£54.5 million)
Skill Moves: Two-Star
Best Attributes: 92 Aggression, 86 Stamina, 84 Standing Tackle

Rúben Dias battered his way into SL Benfica’s Liga NOS ranks near the start of the 2017/18 season, cementing his place as one of the team’s most trusted defenders.

Still only 22-years-old, the 6’2’’ centre-back has already accumulated 118 appearances, ten goals, and four assists, as well as 17 caps for Portugal.

Dias boasts a tremendous potential rating of 88, but the Portuguese wonderkid already has an overall rating worthy of placing in many starting line-ups.

He already boasts strong ratings for a centre-half, including 92 aggression, 82 interceptions, 82 heading accuracy, 83 defensive awareness, 84 standing tackle, 81 sliding tackle, and 86 stamina. However, Dias is lacking in pace, with 63 acceleration, 67 sprint speed, and 54 agility.

Rúben Neves (OVR 82 – POT 87)

Team: Wolverhampton Wanderers
Best Position: LCM, CM, RCM
Age: 22
Overall/Potential: 82 OVR / 87 POT
Value (Release Clause): £26.5 million (£51.5 million)
Skill Moves: Three-Star
Best Attributes: 86 Long Passing, 86 Shot Power, 85 Curve, 85 Vision, 85 Short Passing

Having impressed for years as a teenager for FC Porto, nearly everyone who had seen Rúben Neves play raised an eyebrow at his £16.11 million move from the Liga NOS to Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the running to the 2017/18 season.

As the centrepiece of Nuno Espírito Santo’s team, Neves has developed into a fine central midfielder, following up his four goals and three assists in 93 games for the Estádio do Dragão residents with 14 goals and seven assists in 120 games for Wolves.

Neves’ overall rating is rather underwhelming, given the skill that he’s continued to demonstrate in the Premier League, but the playmaker still boasts a strong POT of 87.

Pulling the strings from the middle of the park is Neves’ strength in Career Mode, with FIFA 20 giving him ratings of 85 for short passing, 84 for his free-kick accuracy, 86 for long passing, 82 for ball control, 85 for vision, and 84 for his long shots.
