Once South American minnows trying to make their mark on world football, Colombia is now a team on the rise.
Colombia has an uninspiring history in international football, reaching one quarter-final, in Brazil 2014, from six World Cup appearances. They sit 10th in the FIFA World Rankings at the time of writing. Their only silverware to date was claimed back in 2001, winning the Copa America on their home soil.
A few memorable names have graced Los Cafeteros’ stage, most famously: Carlos Valderrama – with a hairstyle to match his maestro-type play in midfield – Faustino Asprilla, goalkeeper René Higuita (mainly for an outlandish scorpion kick), record scorer Radamel Falcao, and most recently, playmaker James Rodríguez.
In this edition of FIFA 21 Wonderkids, we look at who’s next out of the Colombian pipeline in Career Mode.
Choosing FIFA 21 Career Mode’s Best Young Colombian Players
As youth and potential are paramount to most Career Mode signings, every player in this list has a maximum age of 23-years-old and a minimum potential rating of 80.
You’ll find the five Colombian wonderkids with the highest potential featured in the body of this article, with a table of every other player meeting these criteria at the foot of the page.
Déibar Caicedo (68 OVR – 86 POT)
Team: Deportivo Cali
Best Position: RM
Age: 20
Overall Rating/Potential Rating: 68 OVR / 86 POT
Skill Moves/Weak Foot: Four-Star / Three-Star
Value (Release Clause): £2.9 million (£5.7 million)
Wage £900 per week
Best Attributes: 89 Balance, 87 Agility, 84 Acceleration
Developing in the ranks of Deportivo Cali, Déibar Caicedo looks to be an exciting prospect. At just 20-years-old, he’s already bursting down the wing, leaving defenders in his wake.
Featuring 16 times this season to score two goals and three assists, he’s showing great promise. He has, however, picked up a red card this term, so only time will tell if he can control his tackles.
With four-star skills, 78 dribbling, and 72 ball control, Caicedo already has an excellent base to build upon in FIFA 21. His technical ratings complement his athletic 89 balance and 87 agility perfectly.
To increase Caicedo’s proficiency, working on his 57 crossing, 60 curve, and 60 finishing will only boost his value, allowing you to potentially unearth the next best product from South America for an absolute steal at £5.7 million
Luis Javier Suárez (75 OVR – 86 POT)
Team: Granada CF
Best Position: ST
Age: 22
Overall Rating/Potential Rating: 75 OVR / 86 POT
Skill Moves/Weak Foot: Three-Star / Four-Star
Value (Release Clause): £11.3 million (£25.9 million)
Wage £21,000 per week
Best Attributes: 87 Acceleration, 86 Sprint Speed, 83 Finishing
This 22-year-old forward is trying to break into first-team football this season, with Granada CF, having been signed by English outfit Watford and continuously loaned out abroad.
Luis Javier Suárez impressed last season at Real Zaragoza, amassing 19 goals and six assists in 38 Segunda Liga appearances, tempting Granada CF to break their transfer record on the young Colombian.
A high attacking work rate is an attractive addition to the 75-rated player, who already boasts 83 finishing, 77 positioning, and 76 shot power. Suárez’s athletic prowess is reflected in-game, with pace stats of 86 sprint speed and 87 acceleration.
Furthermore, his 82 strength and 79 stamina mean that he can have extended runs in the team without resting much. Suárez’s adept 70 dribbling and 71 ball control further make a case for the young striker.
Luis Díaz (78 OVR – 86 POT)
Team: FC Porto
Best Position: LM
Age: 23
Overall Rating/Potential Rating: 78 OVR / 86 POT
Skill Moves/Weak Foot: Four-Star / Four-Star
Value (Release Clause): £27.9 million (£61.4 million)
Wage: £13,000 per week
Best Attributes: 92 Acceleration, 92 Sprint Speed, 86 Agility
Luis Díaz signed for FC Porto from his native Junior FC in the summer of 2019, making the move for a modest fee of £6.5 million.
The winger followed up the move with an impressive haul of 14 goals and seven assists in 50 appearances for the Dragões last season. Hitting the ground running this campaign, he has two goals and one assist from five appearances.
In FIFA 21 Career Mode, Díaz’s most attractive attribute ratings have to be for his blistering pace, boasting 92 sprint speed and 92 acceleration. Also, his 83 stamina ensures that Díaz tears down the pitch all game.
If he hasn’t left defenders in the dust, he can be equally lethal from range, thanks to his 82 long shots and 82 shot power, so don’t be shy about aiming for the top corner from range. Díaz’s release clause is a staggering £61.4 million, but that sum could well be worth it in the long run.
Luis Sinisterra (75 OVR – 84 POT)
Team: Feyenoord
Best Position: RM
Age: 21
Overall Rating/Potential Rating: 75 OVR / 84 POT
Skill Moves/Weak Foot: Four-Star / Four-Star
Value (Release Clause): £11.3 million (£18 million)
Wage: £11,000 per week
Best Attributes: 93 Agility, 91 Acceleration, 88 Jumping
In February 2020, a knee injury halted a fine first-team run at Feyenoord for Luis Sinisterra. Before the injury, the Colombian youngsteramassed 32 appearances, seven goals, and three assists, being utilised across the frontline for the Dutch side.
Still on the treatment table, Sinisterra has yet to appear in the Eredivisie this season, but he will be keen to reignite the form that he found last year.
There seems to be a trend with Colombian wonderkids and pure athletic ability; Sinisterra boasts 88 jumping and has pace to burn with 91 acceleration, 87 sprint speed, and 78 stamina. Pair that with his high attacking and defending work rates, and you have a frightening forward who’s not afraid of tracking back.
Sinisterra starts Career Mode with fine base stats in shooting, passing, and he’s already an adept dribbler of the ball.
Jorge Carrascal (73 OVR – 84 POT)
Team: Núñez FC (River Plate)
Best Position: CAM
Age: 22
Overall Rating/Potential Rating: 73 OVR / 84 POT
Skill Moves/Weak Foot: Five-Star / Two-Star
Value (Release Clause): £6.3 million (£10.1 million)
Wage: £11,000 per week
Best Attributes: 91 Balance, 87 Agility, 81 Dribbling
Previously with Ukrainian side FC Karpaty Lviv, Jorge Carrascal signed for Argentinian giants River Plate in January 2020 for a fee of £2.25 million, following a successful loan spell with the club.
The Cartagena-native featured sparingly last season, managing eight appearances and two goals in the Primera División. In the 2020 Copa Libertadores, Carrascal picked up two goals and an assist.
Our first five-star skilled player, Carrascal makes mincemeat of defenders’ attempts to dispossess him. His 81 dribbling, 91 balance, and 87 agility allow this CAM to effortless glide past players.
A potential free-kick specialist, the Colombian wonderkid already possesses 71 free-kick accuracy and 75 curve. By nursing these attributes, along with his 69 long shots and 67 shot power, he could well become lethal from dead-ball situations.
