Still seen as quite the unusual formation to deploy, the back-five featuring wing backs set-up can be used to great effect if the manager has nuanced defenders in place.
The wing back role can be tricky for veteran players to adapt to, what with it demanding much more from the position, as well as altered defensive responsibilities. While there are some top-class players rated highly enough in the right wing back position to play there in FM 21, the best way to cement the position in your team is to bring in in a wonderkid.
On this page, you’ll find all of the best young right wing backs in Football Manager 2021, ranked by their potential ability ratings.
Choosing the best wonderkid right wing backs (RWB) in FM 21
To be classed as a right wing back wonderkid for this list, the player has to be young, strong in the position, and have a high potential ability (PA).
All of the wonderkids here are 21-years-old or younger, have a positional ability rating of at least 18 for the right wing back position, and a minimum PA of 135.
Due to how FM 21 also gives some players negative PA to make each save different, we’ve also included the best young players with PA ranges of 140 to 170 (-85), 150 to 180 (-9), 160 to 190 (-95), 170 to 200 (-10).
You can find each of the top-five right wing back wonderkids with the highest PAs featured below, with a table of all of the best young WBRs of FM 21 at the foot of the page.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (160 CA / 178 PA)
Best Positions: DR, WBR
Current Ability/Potential Ability: 160 CA / 178 PA
Value: £55 million
Wages: £75,000 per week
Best Attributes: 18 Crossing, 17 Passing, 17 Technique
Trent Alexander-Arnold is discussed so often in the circles of the best right backs in the world that many forget that the Liverpudlian is still only 22-years-old. As a part of Liverpool’s first Premier League-winning squad, the youngster has already etched his name alongside fellow local heroes.
En route to the title, Alexander-Arnold managed to score four goals from right back as well as set-up another 13. While a calf injury pumped the breaks on his 2020/21 campaign, he started the season in good form, creating ample opportunities for the deadly trio of the Reds.
Given a 160 CA in Football Manager 2021, Alexander-Arnold already ranks as one of the best right backs and right wing backs available, only trumped by Joshua Kimmich (171 CA). Boasting a 178 PA, Liverpool’s wonderkid can even surpass the level that his German counterpart.
As you would assume, the club doesn’t want to sell one of their most prized assets. Still, should you get Alexander-Arnold in your team, you’ll reap the benefits of his 18 crossing, 14 corners, 14 free-kick taking, 17 passing, 17 technique, 16 vision, and 16 natural fitness.
Achraf Hakimi (154 CA / 169 PA)
Team: Internazionale Milano
Best Positions: DR, WBR, MR
Current Ability/Potential Ability: 154 CA / 169 PA
Value: £26 million
Wages: £133,560 per week
Best Attributes: 19 Pace, 17 Crossing, 17 Acceleration
To say that Achraf Hakimi upholds a high club identification would be an understatement, with the 22-year-old having already played several times for Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Inter Milan. After a superb two-year loan spell to the German side, in which he scored 12 goals and set-up 17 in 73 games, Inter decided to make a permanent move for Hakimi, paying £36 million in September 2020.
Under Antonio Conte – a master of wing back formations – the Madrid-born Moroccan has featured in a listed right midfield role, while being tasked with right wing back duties. The Nerazzurri haven’t been playing with wide forwards or wide defenders, enabling Hakimi to dominate the right flank.
In FM 21, Hakimi ranks as one of the best young right wing backs, with a solid 154 CA having the chance to develop into a superb 169 PA. Best of all, he’s incredibly versatile down the right flank, being capable of playing to the best of his abilities in the roles of defence right, wing back right, and midfield right.
The physical prowess of the Moroccan wonderkid enables him to control the right side singlehandedly in FM 21, boasting 17 acceleration, 17 natural fitness, 19 pace, 16 stamina, and 15 work rate. Hakimi’s also great with the ball at his feet, thanks to his 17 crossing, 14 dribbling, and 13 passing.
Tariq Lamptey (135 CA / 165 PA)
Team: Brighton & Hove Albion
Best Positions: DR, WBR
Current Ability/Potential Ability: 135 CA / 165 PA
Value: £25.5 million
Wages: £5,000 per week
Best Attributes: 20 Acceleration, 16 Agility, 16 Pace
As is often the case with Chelsea, Tariq Lamptey was another promising prospect making his way through the system only to find big-money roadblocks in the Premier League squad. After being handed a few cameo appearances by the Blues, Brighton & Hove Albion swooped in during the 2020 January window.
For a nudge below £3 million, the Gulls acquired a first-team right back who also proven themselves capable in right midfield. Terrifyingly fast and tenacious in the tackle, Lamptey has been used similarly to Achraf Hakimi in Milan: being given the right side of the pitch in a condensed three-at-the-back formation.
The young Londoner may only have a 135 CA to commence the game, but he manages to rank as one of the top right wing back wonderkids in FM 21, featuring a 165 PA. His potency goes much further than the 135 CA would suggest, though, with 20 acceleration, 16 agility, and 16 pace making Lamptey a nightmare for any left-sided player unfortunate enough to line-up on match day.
For as much pace as the 5’3’’ full back has, there’s still a lot of work needed to raise his defensive skill. The 11 tackling, ten passing, seven marking, ten crossing, and eight positioning would benefit from some high-intensity training.
Dodô (140 CA / 160 PA)
Team: Shakhtar Donetsk
Best Positions: DR, WBR
Current Ability/Potential Ability: 140 CA / 160 PA
Value: £3.1 million
Wages: £7,750 per week
Best Attributes: 17 Pace, 16 Strength, 15 Dribbling
Along with Portugal, Ukraine has operated as a gateway to European football for many top-class Brazilian talents over the years, with Shakhtar Donetsk once again finding a Brazilian wonderkid. Signed from Coritiba in 2018, Dodô has already tallied over 50 games, four goals, and eight assists for the reigning Premier Liga champions.
Despite his 5’4’’ stature, Dodô has proven to be quite the handful down the right side, with his pace and upper-body strength enabling him to play as a wrecking ball with or without possession. With a goal and an assist by the ten-game mark of this Premier Liga campaign, the right back remains a starter, featuring prominently in the team’s against-all-odds victory over Real Madrid and draw with Inter Milan in the Champions League.
As one of the best young right wing backs in FM 21, managers will be looking to acquire the services of Dodô – particularly because he’s valued at a mere £3.1 million. However, the club doesn’t want to sell, so you may have to pay above the market price to bring in the feisty Brazilian defender in the first season.
Bringing the Taubaté-native to your club would certainly be worthwhile, though, as his 140 CA makes him just about first-team ready now, while his 160 PA could make him one of the best WBRs in the game. As it stands, his best attributes are his 15 dribbling, 15 off the ball, 15 acceleration, 15 stamina, 16 strength, and 17 pace.
Emerson (140 CA / 159 PA)
Team: Barcelona (on-loan to Real Betis)
Best Positions: DR, WBR
Current Ability/Potential Ability: 140 CA / 159 PA
Value: £11.75 million
Wages: £25,500 per week
Best Attributes: 16 Off the Ball, 15 Stamina, 15 Acceleration
Emerson, also known as ‘Emerson Royal,’ was the subject of an overly complicated transfer move that brought him over from Atlético Mineiro to Real Betis, but also Barcelona. Barça teamed-up with Betis in 2019 to pay half of Emerson’s transfer fee, securing the right to be able to buy the Brazilian outright in 2021.
The Cataluña giants have since paid-in enough to make Emerson a Barcelona player, with him seeing out the end of a two-year loan to Los Verdiblancos this season. For the inconsistent Estadio Benito Villamarín residents, the 22-year-old has remained a constant name in the starting XI.
Born in São Paulo, Emerson is in his third season of La Liga football, harnessing his skills enough for FM 21 to grade him as one of the best right wing back wonderkids in the game. He’s capable of competing for a first-team spot at 140 CA, but will quickly develop into his decent 159 PA to claim the role as his own.
Many of the best young players on this list rely on gaudy physical ratings to pump-up their CA, but managers will be happy to find that Emerson is a very well-rounded WBR. Only his eight free-kick taking and eight aggression lag behind the balanced ratings sheet of the Brazilian wonderkid.
