A position in high demand, the centre attacking midfield role tends to feature the creative mastermind of the side; every team needs the flair and artistry the players in this position bring.
Often floating in between the opposing midfield and defence, they drive the team forward in attack, spread the ball wide for wingers, gift balls to the strikers, and glide past players to get themselves on the scoresheet.
In this article, we examine who the next series of wonderkid centre attacking midfielders (AMC) are in Football Manager 21.
Choosing the best young CAMs in Football Manager 21
For a player to feature as a wonderkid in this list, they had to meet three criteria. Firstly, they had to be 21-years-old or younger; secondly, they needed a positional rating of at least 18; and lastly, each player required a minimum potential ability of 150 or a -9 PA range (150-180).
Potential is represented in a couple of ways in Football Manager 21. The standard way is a number between zero and 200 being assigned to a player, with the higher number, the better a player can become in-game.
The other way that a player’s potential is classified is with a negative number between one and ten, equating to a PA range which is represented by the following series: -10 (170-200), -95 (160-190), -9 (150-180), down to -1.
If a player is given a negative potential or PA range, it means that the developers have determined the player’s potential to be too uncertain to assign a definitive number. In each new save game, the player’s potential will fall within the PA range at random.
In this article, you can find the top-five players boasting the highest potential in the body of the article, with a table listing every other wonderkid meeting our criteria found at the base of the page.
Kai Havertz (153 CA / 180 PA)
Best Positions: AMC, MC
Current Ability/Potential Ability: 153 CA / 180 PA
Value: £39.5 million
Wages: £150,000 per week
Best Attributes: 17 Composure, 17 Pace, 17 Technique
Chelsea’s marquee signing of 2020, Kai Havertz made the move from German club Bayer 04 Leverkusen for £72 million. In his 12 games for the Blues so far, he’s bagged himself four goals and two assists, all while adjusting to Premier League competition.
Even at the young age of 21-years-old, Havertz amassed 150 appearances for Leverkusen. Chelsea were persuaded to sign him after seeing Havertz score 46 and set-up 31 more during his time in Germany.
A huge potential of 180 is mouth-watering enough, let alone him becoming one of the world’s best playmakers. His fantastic 17 first touch, 17 vision, and 17 composure ensure that he always finds a way to get the team on the front foot when he receives the ball.
Being an accomplished first-team player who’s recently moved clubs, Havertz will have little interest in another move, and Chelsea will command a very hefty fee if you want him at your club in FM 21.
Martin Ødegaard (155 CA / 178 PA)
Team: Real Madrid
Best Positions: AMC, MC
Current Ability/Potential Ability: 155 CA / 178 PA
Value: £33.5 million
Wages: £86,367 per week
Best Attributes: 18 Flair, 18 Anticipation, 17 Teamwork
Starting his career with Strømsgodset, Martin Ødegaard became the youngest player to feature in the Norwegian league in 2014. The talented midfielder had a host of elite clubs chasing his signature, eventually choosing Real Madrid in 2015 – the same year that he became the Spanish club’s youngest player.
After three loan spells away from Los Blancos, Ødegaard is in the capital now, playing eight times so far this season as he looks to prove his worth to current manager Zinedine Zidane.
Possessing 17 teamwork and 18 anticipation, Ødegaard excels at reading the game and propelling the team forward with key passes. His teamwork is epitomised by the fact that he prefers to look for a pass instead of shooting.
Fantastic with the ball at his feet, showcasing 18 flair, 16 dribbling, and 16 first touch, the FM 21 AMC wonderkid can easily drift past opponents. Available for a fee in the region of £60 million, this dynamic midfielder could become an essential player for your club.
Nicolò Zaniolo (150 CA / 176 PA)
Best Positions: AMC, AMR
Current Ability/Potential Ability: 150 CA / 176 PA
Value: £19.75 million
Wages: £81,278 per week
Best Attributes: 18 Determination, 17 Aggression, 16 Balance
Nicolò Zaniolo, bounced around clubs at youth level; beginning his journey with Genoa, the young Italian found himself with AS Roma in 2018. The Giallorossi plucked Zaniolo from Inter Milan’s under 19s side for £4.05 million.
Despite an impressive 69 appearances, 14 goals, and six assists for the club, Zaniolo’s development has been halted twice in recent years. A cruciate ligament rupture kept him on sidelines for 172 days last season. Just as he had resumed his first-team duties, tragedy struck again, with another cruciate ligament rupture expected to keep him out until March 2021.
Unfortunately, his luck with injuries follows him to FM 21, with 14 injury proneness. Keep him fit, however, and you get full access to his 18 determination, 16 pace, and 16 strength.
Adding those physical attributes to his 16 finishing and 16 dribbling makes the Italian a potent player in the AMC position. Even though he’s currently injured, Roma want to keep hold of such a talent, but negotiating an initial fee with various clauses could help to lower the asking price.
João Félix (159 CA / 175 PA)
Team: Atlético Madrid
Best Positions: AMC, ST, AML
Current Ability/Potential Ability: 159 CA / 175 PA
Value: £50 million
Wages: £164,753 per week
Best Attributes: 20 Flair, 18 Technique, 18 Off the Ball
The current jewel of Portugal, João Félix gained international attention for his performances at Benfica. His impressive performances coaxed Spanish club Atlético Madrid into spending big in 2019, parting with £114.48 million to ensure that this wonderkid joined their ranks.
The pressure that such a price tag comes with didn’t stop the young man from scoring nine goals and setting up three more during his 36 appearances at the club last season. On track to shatter that record this season, he’s already matched his assists tally and has eight goals to his name so far.
Félix has great versatility in the forward positions in FM 21, able to fill in at striker when necessary by threatening goalkeepers with his 15 finishing and 15 composure. Incredibly talented with the ball at his feet, he lives to beat defenders with his 20 flair and 17 dribbling.
Developing Félix’s 11 work rate will ensure that he always does more for the team in every game, increasing the effectiveness of his strong 16 determination. Expect a similar fee to what the Madrid club paid for him to be demanded if you want him in your squad.
Phil Foden (150 CA / 175 PA)
Team: Manchester City
Best Positions: AMC
Current Ability/Potential Ability: 150 CA / 175 PA
Value: £34.5 million
Wages: £30,000 per week
Best Attributes: 17 Agility, 17 Technique, 17 First Touch
Coming through the Manchester City academy is the highly-rated youngster Phil Foden. Just six months after winning the 2017 under-17 World Cup with England, where he also won the Golden Boot, the midfielder made his debut for his club.
Foden’s racked up 88 appearances since his debut, improving with every chance that he gets – he’s scored 19 and assisted 15 in this time. Current manager Pep Guardiola is full of praise for the English wonderkid and his rapid development in the squad.
His attributes complement his ability in-game, with 17 first touch, 16 vision, and 16 passing highlighting Foden’s eye for a pass. Backed up further by 14 pace and 14 stamina, the midfielder has an excellent base from which to grow.
As he develops, his 14 finishing and 13 composure have plenty of room to improve, making him deadly in-front of goal. To excel, Foden needs plenty of game time and some fine-tuning in the form of coaching to fulfil his huge potential as an FM 21 wonderkid.
