While the game can be enjoyed through its single-player mode, and each superhero is very distinct in their gameplay, it’s always been apparent that the live service angle was the point of Marvel’s Avengers.
As such, a lack of significant updates to the currently somewhat shallow game is hurting its support, with Steam Charts showing its PC player base sinking from 28,145 at its peak in September, to around 2,000 by the middle of October.
This was supposed to change in October, with the first announced DLC character, Kate Bishop (the Young Avengers’ Hawkeye), and new accompanying operations set to launch this month.
Instead, Crystal Dynamics has had to announce a delay to the highly-anticipated first Marvel’s Avengers DLC character release date.
Kate Bishop release date delayed
The Marvel’s Avengers team has been very on the ball when it comes to community communications, updating the site’s news feed weekly, if not a couple of times a week.
In this week’s State of the Game Update, Crystal Dynamics’ head of the studio, Scot Amos, delivered the news that the first Marvel’s Avengers DLC character release date was being delayed.
While a hard date wasn’t revealed, the post read “we’ve decided to push Kate Bishop’s Operation launch back a bit, out of October.”
Amos wrote that it would only be a slight delay to the character DLC release, known as Kate Bishop – Taking AIM, which is to be followed by the Avengers’ Hawkeye (Clint Barton).
The two Hawkeye DLC releases are set to take the form of a double-feature update, but Clint, like Kate, will get his own mission line, Hawkeye – Future Imperfect, released after the first new Marvel’s Avengers character.
Based on the wording of the announcement, which looks forward to next year as well, it seems as though the studio still aims to get both of the Hawkeye updates into Marvel’s Avengers before the end of 2020.
New Marvel’s Avengers additions planned for 2021
Alongside the news of the Kate Bishop DLC delay and the upcoming information about the Hawkeye DLC, a hint of a much larger Marvel’s Avengers update was put out.
The post states “looking into 2021, our biggest Avengers Initiative addition yet will introduce a new Hero, region, and narrative arc.”
The rumours are leaning towards the thinking that said big 2021 Marvel’s Avengers character DLC will feature Black Panther and the introduction of Wakanda.
T’Challa is known to have been in the Marvel’s Avengers DLC roadmap for some time. Publishers Square Enix were set to showcase Black Panther in a presentation, but instead paid tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman and delayed the announcements out of respect.
The fourth Marvel’s Avengers DLC set to swing in at some point is Spider-Man. The iconic comic book character is being made as a PlayStation exclusive, but there should be plenty of other superheroes on the way.
Along with Kate Bishop, Clint Barton, T’Challa, and Peter Parker, several other DLC characters were found in a data mine of the Marvel’s Avengers beta. As reported by Eurogamer, while not officially announced by Square Enix or Crystal Dynamics, Doctor Strange, She-Hulk, Ant-Man, Wasp, War Machine, Captain Marvel, the Winter Soldier, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Mar-Vell, Vision, Quake, and Hulkbuster were all found in the game data.
While the first Marvel’s Avengers DLC character was delayed, there are at least three on the books for the near future, and several others possibly on the update roadmap.
