The Nintendo Switch eShop boasts a tremendous collection of great indie games. While discovering those indie games isn’t made easy by any means, events like the Indie World Showcase help to find the next small-studio sensation.

On 14 April, the latest Indie World video unveiled over 20 upcoming titles from independent developers, crossing several genres and styles. While it didn’t offer any more news on a few still-missing indies highlighted previously, like Sports Story, there were several great-looking games showcased.

Here, we’re putting a spotlight on what we found to be the most intriguing games presented by Nintendo in the 2021 Indie World Showcase.

Aerial_Knight’s Never Yield: Futuristic parkour runner with a great soundtrack

It takes a lot for a game in the runner genre to catch the eye, but the striking art style, futuristic setting, and upbeat soundtrack of Aerial_Knight’s Never Yield certainly made an impression.

Best of all for the new indie game, it has already got a demo version available through the Nintendo eShop. It’s a strategy that more indie games should run with, and in this case, the demo will only further convince players to get it for £11.99 (€14.99/$14.99) when the full version launches on 19 May.

Having had some hands-on experience thanks to the Never Yield demo, it’s fair to say that the gameplay itself lives up to the hype created in the Showcase. The controls are sharp, and even the early levels pose enough of a challenge to keep you wanting to come back, beat the game, and never yield.

Aztech Forgotten Gods: Battle colossal deities of Aztec mythology

In gaming, the ancient Egyptian, ancient Greek, and recently Norse mythology have been explored in-depth across the board, which is one of the reasons why Lienzo’s Aztech Forgotten Gods looks so intriguing.

Combining deities and structures of the ancient Aztec civilisation with a glowing, sci-fi setting, the story follows a young woman, Achtli, who seeks to capture the power of the gods and turn it against them.

Only given a rough release window of autumn 2021, the single-player game hasn’t got an official price yet, but consider Aztech Forgotten Gods worthy of tracking if you’re a fan of the action-adventure genre and Aztec mythology.

Skul The Hero Slayer: Rogue-lite loaded with playable characters

There are plenty of 2D platformers out there, but Skul: The Hero Slayer stood out in the Indie World Showcase for its fast-action gameplay and the huge range of options on offer.

It’s said that the core mechanic of the SouthPAW Games title is switching the head of your character to unleash different abilities. There are 90 playable heads to unlock and loads of other upgrades to grab, which gives players plenty of ways to take on the challenges of the game.

Skul: The Hero Slayer comes to the Nintendo Switch this summer, but its price hasn’t been revealed just yet.

The Indie World Showcase ran through several more games, but those above stood out as the best of the bunch to us. Check out the full video below to find your next indie game obsession.
