The Cabinet Office of the Japanese government announced that they would be collaborating with the popular series Tokyo Revengers to spread the word of an upcoming change to the Civil Code. The change, which will drop the “adult age” from 20 to 18-years-old, goes into effect April 1.
What to expect from the Tokyo Revengers partnership
The article notes that the change to the Civil Code is to respect the right of self-determination of young people and “expects the promotion of active social participation.” The ad for the partnership will have a tagline of “the future is full of new possibilities.”
The promotional anime will feature a time jumping story featuring the main character as they try to save a former lover. With the eventual storyline progressing into one of “saving important people,” it is to stress to young people the possibilities of the future while encouraging participation in society.
The article notes that new voice lines were recorded for the project. Further, some of the tie-in will appear in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.
The popularity of Tokyo Revengers
The Cabinet Office partnered with Tokyo Revengers for good reason.
The manga debuted in 2017 and has already sold over 40 million copies. It won the 44th Kodansha Manga Award for shonen in 2020. The first season of the anime aired in 2021, ending in September to positive reviews. It was also licensed outside of Asia by Crunchyroll.
