Before the lockdown came about, and with a mere 13 games to go, the Philadelphia Flyers were in with a genuine shot at winning the Metropolitan Division.
The Flyers have been stockpiling top prospects for years, and now it’s starting to pay off, especially on the blueline and in net.
In this NHL 20 team guide, you can find all of the players on the Philadelphia Flyers roster, the best Flyers prospects, upcoming picks, and where the team and prospect pool needs improving.
The latest roster at the time (31 March Roster) was used for this guide.
Sean Couturier, Center, 88 OVR

Age: 26
Nationality: Canadian
Position: Two-Way Center
Height/Weight: 191cm, 96kg
Shoots: Left
Best Stats: 92, Defensive Awareness, 91 Endurance, Stick Checking
Sean Couturier has been a solid two-way center for the Flyers since he fully broke out in the 2017/18 season.
Since then, the American has put up two seasons of 76 points, and this season, he scored 22 goals, 59 points, and held a mighty +21 rating.
Better still, he’s been indomitable in the duel, winning 59.6 per cent of his 909 faceoffs.
In NHL 20, Couturier stands 191cm, 96kg, with lofty ratings of 92 for defensive awareness, 90 for faceoffs, 85 for poise, 91 for stick checking, and 90 for passing.
Ivan Provorov, Defenseman. 85 OVR

Age: 22
Nationality: Russian
Position: Two-Way Defenseman
Height/Weight: 185cm, 91kg
Shoots: Left
Best Stats: 94 Endurance, 90 Durability, 89 Stick Checking
Having been taken seventh overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Ivan Provorov burst into Philadelphia’s NHL lines for the start of the 2016/17 season and has played in every game since.
The Russian defenseman has become a pivotal member of Pilly’s powerplay unit, clocking seven goals and nine assists on the man-advantage this season.
Provorov boasts a very high ceiling in NHL 20, and while still only being 22-years-old, the mobile blueliner is already rated 85 OVR.
The two-way defenseman’s best attribute ratings in NHL 20 include his 94 endurance, 90 durability, 89 stick checking, 88 acceleration, 87 agility, and 87 speed.
Carter Hart, Goaltender, 84 OVR

Age: 21
Nationality: Canadian
Position: Hybrid Goaltender
Height/Weight: 188cm, 82kg
Glove: Left
Best Stats: 90 Speed, 89 Agility, 88 Angles, Glove Low, Stick Low
The Flyers have been waiting a long time for Carter Hart to become NHL-ready, with the team dealing with a long line of mediocrity in the crease since drafting the Canadian in 2016.
Last season, Hart finally made his way up and put in some strong performances across his 31 games. This season, with an increased workload, the 21-year-old achieved some decent numbers of 2.42 GAA and .914 save percentage.
While only rated 84 OVR at the start of NHL 20, Hart quickly becomes one of the top-rated goaltenders overall. He’s one of the best young players in the game, let alone the best young goaltender.
Play Hart as the dominant starter from the off, and you’ll quickly see his overall rating climb into the 90s, with his current 90 speed, 89 agility, 87 recover, and 87 rebound control already good enough to win some games.
NHL 20 Philadelphia Flyers Roster
From the latest update, 31 March Online Roster, this is how the Philadelphia Flyers first lines start.
Even though Claude Giroux is listed as a center in NHL 20, his deployment on the left wing of Line 1 perfectly complements the two-way play of Couturier and shooting ability of Jakub Voracek.
However, as one of the best faceoff centers in the game, Giroux’s talents are a bit wasted out wide.
Claude Giroux (88) – Sean Couturier (88) – Jakub Voracek (86)
Ivan Provorov (85) – Matt Niskanen (83)
Carter Hart (84)
Name | Overall | Age | Position | Role | Shoots | Best Stats |

Brian Elliott | 81 | 34 | Goaltender | Hybrid | Left | 87 Speed, 87 Vision, 87 Agility |
The Flyers’ lines are filled with highly-rated young players who will only continue to improve.
Philadelphia’s defence is pretty much sorted for the next couple of seasons, all of the best forwards are locked down for several seasons to come, and Hart only becomes an RFA in 2021.
That said, the team could do with a few more dimensions and some different options throughout the lines, with 12 of the 21 skaters programmed to play in a two-way role and two more being power forwards.
Morgan Frost, Center, 75 OVR

Age: 20
Nationality: Canadian
Position: Playmaker Center
Shoots: Left
Potential: Top 6 med
Having eclipsed 100 points in the OHL in back-to-back seasons, Morgan Frost was brought down south to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL for 2019/20.
Having impressed in the minors, Frost was called up to the NHL lines, scoring on his debut and in his second game, putting together seven points in 20 games before returning to the Phantoms.
In NHL 20, given the strength of Philadelphia’s center corps, Morgan Frost isn’t quite NHL-ready just yet.
That said, the Canadian playmaker is still only 20-years old and can be considered for a bump up at the start of the second season of Franchise Mode.

Philadelphia Flyers’ upcoming draft picks:
- 2020 Draft Picks: 1st (PHI), 2nd (PHI), 4th (PHI), 5th (PHI), 7th (PHI), 7th (MON)

- 2022 Draft Picks: 1st (PHI), 2nd (PHI), 3rd (PHI), 4th (PHI), 5th (PHI), 6th (PHI), 7th (PHI)
The Flyers’ lines are stacked with high-ceiling talents, and there are plenty of prospects getting ready to challenge those in the NHL.
Perhaps the only particular area that could do with a bit of a boost is on the wings, with the right wing being the shallowest position of the team.
The Philadelphia Flyers are all set to challenge for greatness over the next few seasons, with a bit of trade deadline dealing and some free agency poaching, Philly can very quickly become Stanley Cup favourites in NHL 20.
