The Quarry: How to Solve Hackett Family Estate Holding Cages Puzzle

Here's how you can complete the holding cages puzzle in The Quarry.

The Quarry is a cinematic survival horror game where, depending on your decisions, characters will live or die. The ten hours are filled with good dialogue, character building, and an expansive story that initially leads you to believe one thing only for a completely different outcome.

In one of the later chapters of the game, you will control Ryan as he and Laura make their way through the Hackett Family Estate from the old rum running tunnels. There, you’ll find Jacob trapped in a holding cell and needing your help to escape. Read below to find out the solution to the puzzle that will free Jacob and NOT the creature in the adjacent cage.

How to trigger saving Jacob in the holding cages

Importantly, you must agree to help Jacob to trigger the puzzle. If you choose to follow Laura, then Jacob will be left there with the creature. Spoiler alert: if you don’t free him, well, Laura will cut power to the mansion during a fight, opening all of the cages – including Jacob’s and the creature.

If you’re going for the trophy where all counselors live, then free him. If you’re going for the one where they all die, leave him. Just know that if you do choose to help him, you’ll end up going right to Laura regardless.

How to solve the holding cages puzzle

When you agree to help Jacob, Ryan will look back at the cages and take a look at the numbers on the cages. You’ll see the numbers 3, 5, and 7. The first is above Jacob, the second the main door, and the last the creature. You’ll then head to a electrical box with levers numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4.

What you want to do is pull the levers of the two numbers that when added together equals the number above the cage. First, open the main door with 3 and 2 or 4 and 1 as they both equal five. Then, open Jacob’s with 1 and 2 as they are the only combination to equal three. From there Jacob will slip out and you’ll tell him to backtrack through the mines, though the journey may be treacherous.

Whatever you do, do NOT open the cage of the creature unless you’re aiming to kill everyone. Another big spoiler alert: the creature in the adjacent cage is actually Nick.

There you go, your key to solving the puzzle in the holding cages bathed in red light. Choose the outcome that best fits your playthrough – saving everyone or orchestrating their deaths.
