A few years ago, Train Simulator third-party developer Steam Sounds Supreme released their BR Standard Class 9F enhancement pack. The pack was a real hit, but with one omission: it didn’t include the last surviving single chimney 9F, No.92134.

Despite quite a long wait, the loco has finally made its way into Train Sim 2021, with a new pack being crafted by Steam Sounds Supreme.

The importance of the 9Fs and 92134

The Standard Class 9Fs were the final steam freight locomotives built for Britain’s railways. They were the most powerful ever built, with a 2-10-0 wheel arrangement and being capable of hauling passenger services if they received the call-up. They became legendary for their duties on the Somerset & Dorset railway, famed for its steep inclines.

Most preserved 9Fs feature a double chimney arrangement, but a large amount of the class was built with a single chimney. A double chimney is more efficient, but a single chimney provides a crisper, sharper exhaust beat, which equates to more noise – something that’s a hit with rail enthusiasts.

All but one single chimney 9F were cut up, with 91234 being the sole survivor of that particular variation. It went through various ownerships before the current owners bought it a few decades ago. Finally, after not steaming since the 1960s, the model was returned to steam at the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway in September 2019.

The return to steam allowed a single chimney 9F to be heard for the first time since the 1960s, and since that return in 2019, the 91234 has ran virtually trouble-free, and was a vital part of the NYMR’s services during its 2020 season amidst the pandemic.

This year sees the loco again in action – its second full season since the restoration. It is a testament to both the current owners and the NYMR that the 91234 has been able to steam at all, and it’s ideal for the railway’s heavy trains.

Priced at just £2.50, the 92134 pack is an extension to the base 9F enhancement pack from Steam Sounds Supreme. The base pack itself is £8.50, which requires the 9F add-on for Train Simulator that is available on the Steam store.

The 92134 pack includes the single chimney 9F in ex-works condition, with custom particles and scripting to allow for more advanced driving, as well as some authentic sounds recorded from BR standard locomotives. A scenario for the Whitby to Pickering Heritage Line free route is included as well.

Since the return to steam, the 92134 has been a popular fixture on the heritage circuit, and now, at last, Train Simulator players can get their hands on this truly unique locomotive.
