Alterac Valley in World of Warcraft Fresh Classic releases January 16. Here are some tips to mastering the battleground as it was when World of Warcraft first released.
Know Your Map and Objectives
Familiarize yourself with the map’s layout in detail: there are seven graveyards, four towers or bunkers per faction, and two mines (Irondeep in the north and Coldtooth in the south). Key faction generals, Vanndar Stormpike (Alliance) and Drek’Thar (Horde), are located in Dun Baldar and Frostwolf Keep, respectively.
Coordinate and Stick with Your Group
In Classic, 1v1 encounters often are completely unbalanced. Avoid wandering solo. A group of players will have the tools necessary to combat crowd control and other class-specific counters. Travel with a group for better survival and objective efficiency.
Cap and Defend Towers and Graveyards
Capturing enemy towers/bunkers reduces the number of elite guards in the enemy general’s room, while securing graveyards advances your spawn points. Always defend until they are fully capped (4 minutes) to prevent recaptures.
Turn in Resources to Bolster Your Team
Collect and turn in resources like Armor Scraps, Storm Crystals, or mine supplies to upgrade your faction’s troops, launch ground/cavalry assaults, or summon powerful lords like Lokholar the Ice Lord or Ivus the Forest Lord.
Don’t Waste Time Fighting Every Enemy|
Avoid unnecessary PvP fights that don’t advance the battleground’s goals. Prioritize strategic objectives and only engage in combat if it aids in capturing a resource, defending a point, or halting the enemy’s progress.
Strategize Graveyard Control
Securing and holding key graveyards ensures your team has strategic respawn points. Avoid over-capturing to prevent pushing enemy players into undesirable locations. Focus on graveyards near objectives to keep the pressure on and shorten your team’s regroup times.
Utilize Your Alterac Insignia
Obtain your Stormpike Insignia or Frostwolf Insignia from the Proving Grounds quest for a battleground-specific hearthstone. Upgrade it with reputation levels to improve utility, including faster teleportation back to your base.
Don’t Ignore the Mines
Secure the Irondeep or Coldtooth Mines to generate valuable supplies for ground assaults. Killing the mine bosses and maintaining control ensures a steady resource flow, giving your team a significant advantage over time.
Avoid Dangerous Chokepoints
Steer clear of the infamous chokepoints like the Alliance bridge or Horde ravine unless properly coordinated. Fighting in these areas risks resets and delays. Instead, use alternate paths to flank or bypass enemy defenses.
Focus on the Generals for Victory
The primary goal is killing the enemy general, Vanndar or Drek’Thar. Ensure your team has cleared enough towers/bunkers to weaken their defenses before making a push. Coordinate tanks, healers, and DPS to avoid resetting the general during the final assault.
