AI in Gaming: Ubisoft, Roblox, and Blizzard Embrace Artificial Intelligence for Next-Generation Games

In the world of gaming, more and more game developers are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to automate tedious aspects of game development and unlock new creative possibilities. Companies like Ubisoft, Roblox, and Blizzard are harnessing generative AI to bring NPCs to life and create more detailed in-game worlds, allowing developers to focus on the most important aspects of game development.

    Ubisoft

Ubisoft, the creator of games like Diablo, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft, has reportedly been experimenting with AI to create in-game character renderings. According to an internal memo from May, the company has deployed its own internal AI tool, cautioning employees against using third-party AI platforms to safeguard confidential company data and intellectual property. While Ubisoft executives are excited about the potential use of AI in the next generation of games, some employees have noted that the company’s AI still has room for improvement in detecting bugs and issues in the games it has been tested on.

    Square Enix

In April, Square Enix’s AI division showcased a demo of its AI-generated update to the 1983 text adventure game, “The Portopia Serial Murder Case,” demonstrating how large language models can be applied to text-based games. Square Enix, known for games like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, has been exploring AI for some time. In May 2022, the company announced plans to sell several subsidiaries, including the Tomb Raider franchise, and invest in artificial intelligence and Web3 games.

    Roblox

In February, the online gaming platform Roblox launched two new generative AI tools to streamline game creation: Code Assist and Material Generator. These tools automate basic coding tasks by generating helpful code snippets and creating object textures based on prompts. Roblox states that utilizing generative AI simplifies and accelerates the creative process. The platform also plans to enable third-party AI services, aiming to attract AI developers and creators to the Roblox ecosystem.

    Blizzard Entertainment

Blizzard Entertainment, the studio behind Diablo, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft, also utilizes AI for in-game character renderings. According to the New York Times, Blizzard employs an internal AI platform to generate in-game characters, ensuring the prevention of data leaks from confidential company information.

The gaming industry is embracing artificial intelligence to expedite game development and drive creative innovations. While challenges remain, the incorporation of AI in the gaming world holds exciting potential for both players and developers alike.
