Gone are the days of the stay-at-home right back, with full-backs being expected to press up the byline, work crosses into the box, and still uphold the backline.
In FIFA 21, speed rules all, with copious amounts of acceleration and sprint speed often being gifted to the wide forwards – putting extra strain on the right back position.
To help you keep up with the runaway wingers, we’re going through the fastest right backs of FIFA 21.
Choosing the fastest right backs of FIFA 21
There’s much more to the effectiveness of a player’s speed than just sprint speed in FIFA 21, but of course, the top speed of a right back is very important.
Alongside sprint speed, acceleration is the primary factor that influences how fast a player runs in the game, indicating how quickly the player can hit their top speed.
Another key attribute that particularly plays a role in how fast a right back is in match situations is agility. Determining movement aspects like turning speed, due to how full-backs will often be asked to flip from attack-facing to chasing a winger, agility is crucial for the fastest right backs to be effective with their speed.
As such, the search for the fastest right backs has been narrowed down to those with high ratings in sprint speed, acceleration, and agility, with their ranking being according to their average rating across the three.
Some right backs who excel in a one or two of these areas didn’t get onto this page as a result, with some notable mentions being Matias Catalán (70 OVR), Kyle Walker (85 OVR), Kingsley Ehizibue (72 OVR), Joakim Mæhle Pedersen (76 OVR), and Ryan Fredericks (76 OVR).
The ratings and data used on this page are drawn from FIFA 21’s 29 January 2021 update.
Fabian Viáfara (Speed Score: 90.33)
Team: Junior FC
Overall/Potential: 71 OVR / 71 POT
Release Clause: £2.1 million
Acceleration/Sprint Speed/Agility: 83 / 93 / 95
Best Attributes: 95 Agility, 93 Sprint Speed, 89 Stamina
Having stepped up from the youth team to the Rionegro Águila first-team in 2013, Fabian Viáfara has spent his entire professional career in Colombia. After being released by the club that developed the right back, he moved to Deportivo Pasto and was then purchased by Junior FC.
After signing for Junior in January 2020, Viáfara immediately moved into the starting right back role, getting three assists in 29 games last season, and continues to hold the job early this season.
Viáfara may be without an international cap, but the Colombian right back comes into FIFA 21 as the fastest RB in the game, boasting 83 acceleration, 95 agility, and 93 sprint speed.
With 72 sliding tackle, 72 crossing, 87 balance, 88 jumping, and 89 stamina to support, the defender from Santiago de Cali has the tools that you need to make the most of his blistering speed.
Ruan (Speed Score: 89.67)
Team: Orlando City SC
Overall/Potential: 67 OVR / 71 POT
Release Clause: £1.8 million
Acceleration/Sprint Speed/Agility: 91 / 94 / 84
Best Attributes: 94 Sprint Speed, 91 Acceleration, 84 Agility
Hailing from Rio de Janeiro, Ruan was on the books of five Brazilian clubs between 2016 and 2018, with his parent club, CA Barra, regularly loaning out the right back.
In 2019, Orlando City of the MLS – former home of Kaká – decided to bring Ruan to North America, with the Brazilian immediately claiming the starting right back role. Also spending time in right midfield, the speedster has already amassed seven assists in 54 games for The Lions.
At 67 OVR and 71 POT, Ruan isn’t going to be a world-beater in FIFA 21, but if you know how to utilise the raw speed on offer, he could certainly be a useful addition to your team.
With 91 acceleration, 84 agility, and 94 sprint speed, the defender can quickly turn and chase down any winger in the game. That said, his 64 sliding tackle, 65 standing tackle, and 59 defensive awareness mean that you’ll need to time every challenge to perfection to avoid commiting a foul.
Kim Tae Hwan (Speed Score: 89.67)
Team: Ulsan Hyundai FC
Overall/Potential: 72 OVR / 72 POT
Release Clause: £2.3 million
Acceleration/Sprint Speed/Agility: 90 / 92 / 87
Best Attributes: 92 Sprint Speed, 90 Acceleration, 87 Agility
Two-time Korean champion, an AFC Champions League winner, and an East Asian Championship winner, Tae-hwan Kim has enjoyed a grand career at domestic level and when he’s been called-up to the Korea Republic squad.
His K League titles both came while playing for FC Seoul, winning the top domestic division in 2009/10 and 2011/12. Now 31-years-old, Kim has found even more success with Ulsan Hyundai, winning the AFC Champions League in 2019/20 – a season which helped him get back into the national side and claim the right back job.
The go-to pick for Paulo Bento in the Korea Republic starting XI is also ranked among the fastest RBs in FIFA 21, boasting 92 sprint speed, 90 acceleration, and 87 agility. Despite the caps, though, Kim is limited in the game by his league-weighed 72 OVR.
While incredibly fast, the South Korean’s 65 standing tackle, 66 sliding tackle, 67 crossing, 67 dribbling, and 65 short passing still mean that you need to be careful when in control of Kim.
Juan Cuadrado (Speed Score: 89.67)
Team: Piemonte Calcio (Juventus)
Overall/Potential: 82 OVR / 82 POT
Release Clause: £31.2 million
Acceleration/Sprint Speed/Agility: 88 / 90 / 91
Best Attributes: 91 Agility, 90 Sprint Speed, 90 Dribbling
In the 2014 World Cup, Juan Cuadrado was one of the many breakout stars of a wildly entertaining Colombia side, with his pace down the right wing wreaking havoc. Before bowing out 2-1 to the hosts, Brazil, in the quarter-finals, the speedster amassed four assists and a goal.
Having bounced around Serie A prior, in the winter window after the 2014 World Cup, Cuadrado sealed a colossal switch from Fiorentina to Chelsea for £27.9 million. However, the move to West London didn’t pan out, but he did find success during several loans to Juventus, becoming a permanent, £18 million signing in 2017.
Now 204 games, 17 goals, and 48 assists into his spell with the Old Lady, at the time of writing, Cuadrado has converted into a right back, or a right midfielder in a three-at-the-back formation, with FIFA 21 giving him an 82 OVR in the role.
The Colombian boasts several favourable ratings, including his 84 crossing, 90 dribbling, 85 ball control, 81 sliding tackle, and 84 shot power, but pace is Cuadrado’s greatest asset. With 88 acceleration, 90 sprint speed, and 91 agility, he ranks as one of the fastest right backs in FIFA 21.
Jeremie Frimpong (Speed Score: 89.67)
Team: Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Overall/Potential: 71 OVR / 84 POT
Release Clause: £9 million
Acceleration/Sprint Speed/Agility: 92 / 89 / 88
Best Attributes: 92 Acceleration, 89 Sprint Speed, 89 Balance
Born in Amsterdam, Jeremie Frimpong developed his game in the youth ranks of Manchester City. Having joined at nine-years-old, the Dutchman was a regular pick at each youth level, but was signed by Celtic for £342,000 before he could feature for the City first-team.
Up in Scotland, Frimpong regularly featured as the starting right back and right midfielder, helping to win the Premiership and Scottish League Cup last season. On 27 January 2021, though, he packed his bags and moved to Germany, with Bayer 04 Leverkusen paying £9.9 million for the talented 20-year-old.
With an 84 POT rating as a right back in FIFA 21, Frimpong is already a top player to sign, but it’s his incredible 88 agility, 89 sprint speed, and 92 acceleration that make him a must-sign defender.
As one of the fastest right backs in the game already, those speed attributes are set to improve over the coming seasons, as will his 76 dribbling, 66 crossing, 67 sliding tackle, 64 strength, and 77 stamina.
