Sony is doubling down on turning its iconic gaming franchises into Hollywood blockbusters. At CES 2025, the tech and gaming giant announced movie adaptations for Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn, marking yet another milestone in the ongoing surge of video game-to-film projects.
Helldivers 2: From Galactic Battlefields to Cinemas
Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2, a squad-based co-op shooter released in 2024, will soon be blasting its way into theaters. Developed in partnership with Sony Pictures, the adaptation promises to capture the game’s fast-paced, action-packed battles as elite “peacekeepers” defend their dystopian planet, Super Earth, from alien threats.
Helldivers 2 is no stranger to cinematic comparisons, often likened to Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers for its satirical take on militarism and fascism. The game humorously casts its soldiers as defenders of a “Managed Democracy,” though the players quickly realize they’re operating within a totalitarian regime. A Helldivers 2 movie will likely embrace this dark humor while delivering the kind of bombastic, sci-fi spectacle fans expect.
“Helldivers 2 is already a movie in spirit,” said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, during Sony’s CES presentation. “We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring this unique, thrilling, and sometimes absurd universe to life.”
While the director, cast, and release date are still under wraps, fans are eager to see how the game’s chaotic co-op dynamics and intergalactic battles will translate to the silver screen. Will it lean more into its satire or focus on blockbuster-level action? Time will tell.
Horizon Zero Dawn: Aloy’s Journey Reimagined
On the other end of the spectrum, Horizon Zero Dawn brings a rich narrative and breathtaking world to its cinematic debut. Originally released in 2017 by Guerrilla Games, the action RPG follows Aloy, a young hunter navigating a post-apocalyptic Earth teeming with robotic creatures and tribal conflict. The film adaptation, produced in collaboration with Columbia Pictures, aims to capture the game’s visual grandeur and emotional depth.
Sony hasn’t revealed much about the Horizon Zero Dawn movie, but expectations are sky-high. The game’s lush environments, compelling characters, and intricate storylines provide fertile ground for a blockbuster adaptation. From Aloy’s journey of self-discovery to her battle against the mysterious forces threatening humanity, the movie has plenty of material to work with.
A Golden Age for Game Adaptations
Sony’s announcement comes at a time when Hollywood is increasingly tapping into the vast potential of video game IPs. Recent successes like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Last of Us on HBO have proven that audiences are hungry for well-executed adaptations.
By expanding its PlayStation Productions pipeline, Sony isn’t just promoting its gaming brands—it’s creating an interconnected ecosystem where games, movies, and TV shows amplify each other. The upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2 movies join an ever-growing list of adaptations, including a planned anime spin-off for Ghost of Tsushima and an Uncharted sequel.
While some projects have stumbled in the past, recent efforts show that studios are learning to respect the source material while tailoring stories for new audiences. If Sony nails the tone and vision for Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn, it could cement its reputation as a leader in game adaptations.
For now, fans can only speculate about what these films will look like. Will Helldivers 2 embrace its chaotic humor, or focus on jaw-dropping action? Can Horizon Zero Dawn recreate the emotional impact and stunning visuals that defined the game? Whatever the answers, one thing is clear: Sony is betting big on the future of gaming in Hollywood.
