Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity: Upgrading Weapons Guide

Bored of Link’s standard broadsword? Here’s how to upgrade the weapons of all of your allies to make them stronger on the battlefield.

For a game sold as a hack-and-slash action title, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is remarkably deep in role-playing elements for each of its characters.

You can train, upgrade, apply armour to, and upgrade the weapons of the likes of Princess Zelda, Link, and Impa. Here, we’re breaking down how you can go about getting better weapons in the hands of your Hyrule warriors in the game Age of Calamity.

How to view and equip weapons in Hyrule Warriors

From the Map Overview screen, to view which weapon each of your characters has equipped, you need to press + to go to the Menu, and then navigate with L/R to the Allies tab.

Here, you’ll see all of your allies, being able to move between each one with the left analogue. On your preferred character, scroll down to the weapon box to see the damage, level, and effects of the weapon in-hand.

Should you want more details about the equipped weapon and to view all of that character’s stored weapons, press A on the weapon block. On the next page, you can see more details about the weapon’s effects as well as equip a different weapon.

How to get new weapons in Hyrule Warriors

When you’re battling across Hyrule, opening crates, defeating powerful bosses, and cutting down the many minions of Calamity Ganon, your warriors will pick-up several items, including weapons.

From the outset, each character can carry 20 weapons, so it’s a good idea to check on their inventory after each quest, battle, or expedition to avoid them reaching capacity. Each hero will collect a certain type of weapon as they hack and slash their way through opposing armies, with several variants out there to be found.

Two weapons of the same name and appearance can be different in level, damage output, and special effects, so it’s worth checking through them all before deciding which one to equip. As for the others, you can sell them or fuse them to upgrade your primary weapon in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

How to upgrade your weapons in Hyrule Warriors

To upgrade your weapons in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, you’ll first need to unlock the Hylian Blacksmith Guild. Via the Map Overview screen, you’ll see a hammer icon pop-up: supply the Guild with the requested materials to unlock the blacksmith.

Once you’ve unlocked the Hylian Blacksmith Guild, you’ll be able to fuse weapons to upgrade your preferred weapon, or sell weapons that you don’t need to get rupees. After you’ve provided the requested materials, visit the blacksmith by pressing A on the blue hammer icon via the Map.

On the next screen, select ‘Fuse Weapons’ and then the character whose weapon you want to upgrade. You’ll then pick the weapon that you want to enhance. Next, you’ll select up to five other weapons to fuse into your chosen weapon.

Each selected basic weapon to fuse will cost you 50 rupees. On the right-hand side, you can see how much the fusion will upgrade your weapon, including its increase in level, damage, and any additional special effects that it will gain.

When you’ve selected the weapons that you’d like to fuse, press + to merge them into your primary weapon. You’ll then be shown another screen before you complete the upgrade, detailing the enhancements and asking you to press A to confirm.

Confirming the fusion will upgrade your weapon but destroy all of the fusion material weapons, so be careful about fusing rare or unique items.

Getting seal-matching boosts in Hyrule Warriors

When you’re selecting the fusion materials for your weapon upgrade in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, the special effects of the materials can be transferred to the weapon being upgraded.

If the fusion materials have the same special effect seal (seen as a grey symbol next to the effect’s name) as a special effect already bound to the primary weapon, the upgrade can receive a significant boost. The boost can come in many forms, such as a substantial enhancement to the special effect or by delivering an increase to the weapon’s attack power.

Weapons have maximum levels which limit the amount that you can enhance each item. So, honing-in on specific special effects in fusion materials, to upgrade your weapon with, can allow you to create a piece that benefits from incredibly potent special effects.

So, if you want to upgrade your weapons in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, be sure to unlock the blacksmith locations and make the most of seal-matching boosts.
