    Microsoft “Strikes” Xbox Trollers

Microsoft’s new strike system for Xbox aims to prevent online abuse by banning offensive players for up to a year.

A New System to Combat Online Abuse

Microsoft has introduced a new “strike” system to combat online abuse on the Xbox platform. Similar to points on a driver’s license, this system accumulates offenses that can lead to temporary bans.

The long-held misconception that the gaming community is toxic has largely been dispelled, but there is always room for improvement.

    How the Strike System Works

Under the new guidelines, players who receive two warnings will be banned from their online account for two days. Four warnings result in a one-week ban. And those who commit eight offenses will be excluded from all multiplayer games – including all social functions – for an entire year.

Strikes remain on a player’s record for six months, after which the list is cleared. It’s a mild verdict, but it allows for quick blocking of trolls when keyboard warrior fantasies set in, and fingers type faster than the mouth could ever speak.

    What Offenses Are Penalized?

In a company statement, Microsoft provided a detailed diagram to avoid confusion about the new system. Obscenities and cheating are punished with one strike, harassment or bullying with two, and hate speech with three strikes.

Those who have been given a timeout due to accumulated strikes will still have access to single-player and previously purchased content, but in “most severe cases,” moderators may result in a player being completely excluded from their account.

Microsoft had already introduced improved anti-abuse measures in July and has now once again opted to enhance the online gaming experience for its users. The new strike system is another step in this direction. Voice messages, often used by angry players to spread insults, can now be recorded in 60-second audio clips and submitted to the Xbox security team via the console dashboard.

Anyone sanctioned by Xbox can appeal against a warning. Xbox assures that all complaints and reports are processed by official staff to ensure that the new guidelines are implemented fairly and transparently.
