No need to dust off the Sega Genesis, Sonic Superstars soothes the pain of nostalgia with classic old-school Sonic the Hedgehog gameplay.
Sonic Superstars is a side-scrolling platformer very similar to the earlier titles of Sonic the Hedgehog in the 1990s. Sonic Superstars was published by Sega and developed by Arzest and the Sonic Team and was released on October 17, 2023, on Playstation, Xbox, Switch, and PC.
The success of Sonic Mania released in 2017 inspired the idea and development of the title. The gameplay is from a 2.5D perspective, characters or enemies can interact and/or appear in the background but movement is linear up, down, right, and left with controller inputs. Sonic Superstars features four characters each with unique powers and the ability to play together with four-player local multiplayer.

1. Revisit Levels With Different Characters In Sonic Superstars
Levels in Sonic Superstars have multiple routes that lead you to the finish line and tons of hidden items and secret areas. Some areas are out of reach for characters like Sonic and Amy who can’t climb or fly. Tails can fly and Knuckles has the ability to glide and climb walls. Keep a mental note of inaccessible areas or items while exploring levels with each character. You can replay any levels as many times as you want even after finishing the game.
2. Collect Fruit to Unlock Special Acts in Sonic Superstars
Zones in Sonic Superstars typically consist of two or three acts. The first two acts are typical high-speed platforming levels with a Dr. Robotnik boss fight at the end. The third act is now either a character-restricted or bonus level where you collect coins and medals. Collect the green and yellow fruits that are scattered on each level to gain access to bonus levels.
3. Explore with Patience On the First Run in Sonic Superstars
Although Sonic is meant to be a fast-paced experience, Sonic Superstar levels are enormous and contain many path variations. It is wise to take your time on the first playthrough to learn the landscape and to prevent too many unwanted deaths due to speeding into unexpected traps and enemies. If collecting Chaos Emeralds and Medals is a priority for you, speeding through the game the first few runs will not yield the best results.

Gold Medals also called Coins are an in-game currency for use in the Shop. You can access the shop in the Battle Mode menu or on the world map in Story Mode. There are multiple ways to earn coins in Sonic Superstars such as collecting 100 rings, winning in battle mode, secret areas, and by playing minigames. Unlock store items by progressing through story mode with each character.
5. Chaos Emeralds Unlock Emerald Powers in Sonic Superstars
Chaos Emeralds have always played a significant role in the Sonic series. Just as in past titles, it is not required to collect all of them but in Sonic Superstars it gives you more than just the ability to turn into Superform. Each emerald has an emerald power that all characters can use to assist in completing levels, reaching secret areas, and making boss fights easier.
