Cyberpunk 2077 is packed with things to do and one of the game’s many features is a puzzle sequence you’ll encounter several times while playing through it. It can be confusing at first, but once you understand how it works you can nail them every time.
The Code Matrix puzzle is essentially a sequence of letters and numbers where you need to work in a calculated pattern to fulfill specific codes for desired outcomes. These can vary widely in outcome and in difficulty, but the method remains the same for them all throughout Cyberpunk 2077.
When will you encounter the Code Matrix puzzle in Cyberpunk 2077?
The most frequent way you’ll have to tackle a Code Matrix puzzle is through Breach Protocol, a quickhacking method used to break into cameras and other kinds of tech. Usually, that’s going to be the first thing you do through quickhacking.
However, that’s far from the only time you’ll run into this challenge. You’ll also find it through encrypted shards, which requires the completion of a Code Matrix to break the encryption.
Finally, you’ll often be able to “Jack In” to certain tech and machines to either take control of systems or extract eurodollars and components as a reward. Regardless of what you’re trying to accomplish, the puzzle design always follows the same pattern.
What is the benefit of successful Breach Protocol, Encryption, or a Jack In?
Breach Protocol is usually going to give you a combat advantage by lessening the RAM cost of a successive quickhack, but it can also sometimes have the option to deactivate an entire security camera system. You always want o look at the sequence required to see what rewards you could be looking at from success.
If you’re trying to break encryption on a shard, you’ll want to save before you attempt things just in case. You usually won’t get another shot if it goes south, and that can damage your chances in a story mission at times.
As you get further in the game, the circumstance you’ll probably start running into more and more is having the chance to “Jack In” to certain tech and extract some eurodollars and components. These are an extremely effective way to stockpile components and money, and you can often fulfill two or even all three sequences with a single run.
How does the Code Matrix puzzle work in Cyberpunk 2077?
When you tackle a Code Matrix puzzle, the most important thing to keep in mind is that you can spend as long as you want analyzing the board and needed sequences before you actually begin. While you’ll be on a timer once you start, if you do the proper analysis beforehand that timer won’t matter.
As seen here, the Code Matrix is going to be a grid of five rows of five alphanumerical entries. To the right of the grid are the solution sequences you’re aiming to recreate.
The buffer field shows you how many inputs you’ll be allowed to recreate one or more of the sequences. You won’t always be able to do them all. Sometimes, only one sequences will be able to be completed at once, but you will have times where you can complete all three.
To begin recreating the pattern, you’ll need to select one of the five entries on the top row, and then you’ll only be able to select from the descending column for the next entry. Once you’ve selected an entry, that one will no longer be available to be selected again throughout the rest of that Code Matrix puzzle.
From that point, the choices will have to follow a perpendicular pattern. This means that you’ll alternate from heading horizontally and vertically across the board. So, let’s look at the following example.
In this Code Matrix puzzle, one of the sequences you’re aiming for is “E9 BD 1C.” If you start at the top and choose the E9 in the second row from the left, you’ll then need to follow that column vertically.
From there, you can choose any of the three BD entries in that column to continue the sequence, but keep in mind that you need to head horizontally to a 1C after you select the BD. Fortunately, all three have that option here.
After you’ve headed horizontally, you’ll then need to alternate to selecting the next entry again in the vertical direction. So if you want to then recreate the “1C E9” entry, you would want to find a 1C that has an E9 either above or below it.
Above, you’ll see a chart showing how this progression looks on the grid starting with that top row E9 and ending with a final 1C. This is just one example, but you can see here how you have to alternate between vertical and horizontal lines, and ultimately the image below shows the end result of this pattern.
Once you’ve got a firm grasp on how they operate, you’ll be able to solve them every single time. Remember, don’t start selecting things until you’ve got your entire pattern planned out. There’s no need to give yourself that time crunch.
Following these guidelines, you’ll be able to handle every Code Matrix that comes at you, whether it’s for Breach Protocol, to “Jack In,” or to break encryption on a shard. Determine your pattern and reap the rewards.
