Following in the footsteps of its predecessor anime series, Naruto Shippuden picks up the story two-and-a-half years after the ending of Naruto; it’s also adapted from Part II of the manga. The popularity of the manga and the first series translated to Shippuden, which had over four times as many seasons as Naruto.

Hopefully, you’re coming here after reading the manga or viewing the original anime, preferably both. Regardless, Shippuden carried the legacy with more mature themes and battles that helped it sustain as one of the more popular anime series over the past 15 years.

Below, you will find the definitive guide to watching Naruto Shippuden. The order will include movies – not necessarily canon – and filler episodes. Movies will be inserted where they should be watched based on release date for storyline consistency. After the full list, there will be a non-filler episodes list as well as a canon list that adheres strictly to the manga. The latter list will exclude mixed canon and anime canon episodes that add a slight bit to smoothen the transition from manga to anime.

Can I skip all Naruto Shippuden fillers?

You can skip all of the fillers in Naruto Shippuden to speed up your viewing. However, Season 21, Episodes 1-4 or 480-483 are the most important fillers and will provide further insights into the younger lives of the episode’s titular characters: Naruto and Hinata, Sasuke and Sakura, Gaara and Shikamaru, and Jiraiya and Kakashi.

Can I watch Naruto Shippuden without watching Naruto?

You can skip the original Naruto series and jump straight to Naruto Shippuden.

However, much of the backstory for the events of Shippuden will be lost, particularly the relationship and rivalry between Naruto and Sasuke, as well as Sasuke, Itachi, and Orochimaru and the prevailing threat of Akatsuki. Side stories, like Rock Lee and Gaara or the Hyuuga clan traditions, also face this possibility of loss.

Still, most of these backstories are touched on in Shippuden, though not to the depth they rightly had in Naruto. If you’d rather skip some of the more juvenile tactics of the original series and into a more serious Shonen, then filling in the gaps with what is conveyed through Shippuden should work for you.

It is recommended to watch Naruto and then Shippuden to have a full understanding of the characters, lore, relationships, and events.

Can I watch Boruto without watching Naruto Shippuden?

For the most part, yes. Most of the characters in Naruto Shippuden and Naruto are side characters in Boruto aside from Naruto as the Hokage, Shikamaru as his advisor, and Sasuke as the lone warrior. Most of the characters from Naruto Shippuden in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations are parents (from the couples developed in Shippuden) or teachers and squad leaders (like Shino and Konohamaru) to the children in the series, who are the main characters. Though the Otsutsuki do make an appearance as enemies, they are different from Kaguya, the Otsutsuki who appeared in Shippuden.

However, like with Shippuden, it is recommended to watch from the beginning with Naruto.

How many episodes and seasons are there in Naruto Shippuden?

There are 500 total episodes and 21 seasons of Naruto Shippuden.

How many episodes are there in Naruto Shippuden without fillers?

There are 300 episodes of Naruto Shippuden without filler episodes. You can cut this down to 233 episodes for purely manga canon episodes.

How many filler episodes are there in Naruto Shippuden?

In total, there are 200 filler episodes of Naruto Shippuden. Some are two-part “special” episodes. Again, fillers do not have any bearing on the actual story events.

There you go, your definitive guide to watching Naruto Shippuden. Jump right in if you wish, but it’s always recommended to start from the beginning, both the manga and original anime series. In any case, enjoy one of the more acclaimed anime series of the past 15 years!
