Grusha ice gym

As you reach the late stages of the Victory Road path toward the Pokémon League, your final stop in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is likely to be the Ice-type gym in Glaseado. While you can battle Grusha at any point once you’ve reached Glaseado, he is the strongest gym leader in all of Paldea.

If your Pokémon Scarlet & Violet journey is still in its early stages, knowing what the final gym leader has in store could help you start early preparations. For those planners or trainers just arriving in Glaseado, you can secure victory with this Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Ice-type gym guide.

In this article you will learn:

  • What kind of test you’ll face at the Glaseado gym

If you’ve not been focusing on the Victory Road path or gym battles, that’s probably the only way you’ve managed to wander into Glaseado unintentionally or too early in the game. Most of the Titans will need to have been defeated for your mount (Koraidon or Miraidon) to be able to trek across Glaseado Mountain in search of the city bearing that same name.

Head south and just a hair east from Montenevera to reach Glaseado, and keep in mind you’ll probably be doing a fair bit of climbing. Once you do finally arrive, it’ll be time to prepare for the most difficult gym leader battle in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.

Glaseado gym test

Unlike some of the other gym tests you’re up against at the later stages of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, things are pretty simple in Glaseado. You’ll be tasked with completing the Snow Slope Run on your mount in less than 90 seconds, a race that is not as difficult as it might first sound.

Simply barrel down the mountain, following the path between the rainbow banners as you go. Missing a banner will add five seconds to your time, but a few likely won’t cost you the test. Fortunately, you don’t have any gym trainers or additional challenges after completing the Snow Slope Run.

How to beat Grusha for the Ice Badge

Once you’ve proven your descension skills, you can finally focus on defeating the strongest gym leader in Paldea. Considering the team Grusha is bringing into battle, you’ll likely want some or all of your team around Level 50 or higher to secure the Ice Badge.

Here are the Pokémon you must defeat to get the Ice Badge from Grusha:

  • Frosmoth (Level 47)
    • Ice- and Bug-type
    • Ability: Shield Dust
    • Moves: Blizzard, Bug Buzz, Tailwind
  • Beartic (Level 47)
    • Ice-type
    • Ability: Snow Cloak
    • Moves: Aqua Jet, Icicle Crash, Earthquake
  • Cetitan (Level 47)
    • Ice-type
    • Ability: Thick Fat
    • Moves: Ice Spinner, Liquidation, Ice Shard
  • Altaria (Level 48)
    • Dragon- and Flying-type
    • Tera Type: Ice
    • Ability: Natural Cure
    • Moves: Ice Beam, Dragon Pulse, Moonblast, Hurricane

With a largely Ice-type team on deck, you’ll want to bring either Rock-, Steel-, or Fire-type Pokémon with you to the Glaseado gym. Fighting-type can also work, but be careful as Frosmoth is not weak to Fighting-type moves and Altaria’s Hurricane is a powerful counter to that weakness, even while Terastallized as an Ice-type.

If you’re bringing a Ground- or Rock-type in with a strong Rock-type move, things could be tough as Grusha has multiple Ice- and Water-type moves across his team. As a result, teaching a Rock-type move to a Pokémon of another type might be the better strategy for this battle. After you secure a win, Grusha will award you the Ice Badge, TM 124 which teaches Ice Spinner, and an additional 8,640 Pokédollars. If this is your final gym badge, all Pokémon of any level will obey you.

How to defeat Grusha in your gym leader rematch

Grusha gym battle

While Grusha is likely going to be your final stop through Victory Road, the rematches level things out in a way where no order offers any particular advantage. Following your triumph at the Pokémon League, the early stages of the Academy Ace Tournament will kick off a string of gym leader rematches across Paldea.

Here are the Pokémon you’ll face in the Glaseado gym rematch against Grusha:

  • Frosmoth (Level 65)
    • Ice- and Bug-type
    • Ability: Shield Dust
    • Moves: Blizzard, Bug Buzz, Tailwind
  • Beartic (Level 65)
    • Ice-type
    • Ability: Snow Cloak
    • Moves: Aqua Jet, Icicle Crash, Earthquake
  • Cetitan (Level 65)
    • Ice-type
    • Ability: Thick Fat
    • Moves: Ice Spinner, Liquidation, Ice Shard, Bounce
  • Weavile (Level 65)
    • Dark- and Ice-type
    • Ability: Pressure
    • Moves: Night Slash, Ice Punch, Shadow Claw, X-Scissor
  • Altaria (Level 66)
    • Dragon- and Flying-type
    • Tera Type: Ice
    • Ability: Natural Cure
    • Moves: Ice Beam, Dragon Pulse, Moonblast, Hurricane

Most of your challenges the second time around for Grusha will be the same, and that means having strong Rock-, Steel-, or Fire-type options makes a huge difference. Be wary of Hurricane again if you bring a Fighting-type, and Weavile’s Shadow Claw could be a sneaky threat for players bringing Skeledirge to this battle.

Just like the first time around, Altaria will likely be your final challenge and the one that is Terastallized. Ideally, you’ll want a highly-leveled powerhouse for that fight in case Altaria gets the opportunity to go on offense. With the strategies outlined in this Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Glaseado Ice-type gym guide, you should be able to guarantee victory over Grusha both times.
