Pro Evolution Soccer has long been hailed as the more realistic football experience compared to the better-selling FIFA series. However, its primary flaw has always been that it doesn’t have the licences to feature the kits, badges, and names of several of the biggest clubs and leagues in world football.
Now, with the incredibly customer-friendly eFootball PES 2021 season update having arrived, early adopters of the Konami title are seeking the go-to way to add the licensed imagery to the game.
To achieve this, and get a fully realistic experience in most copies of PES 2021, you’ll need to acquire and install what is known as a PES Option File.
In this guide, we’ll run through what a PES Option File is and how to use it in eFootball PES 2021.
What is a PES Option File?

A PES Option File is a computer folder which contains files of the images and naming needed to apply licensed kits, names, and badges to the teams, stadiums, and leagues in the game.
The PES Option Files are painstakingly created by the dedicated community of Pro Evolution Socce players, with each season and its new kits getting a new file.
While eFootball PES 2021 does come with an extensive editor, downloading and importing an Options File is the fastest way to get licensed aesthetics in the game.
Where do I get a 2021 PES Option File?

You’ll want to keep in mind that the contents of a PES Option File are mostly community-created, so it’s best to stick to the most trusted websites for the files, as opposed to rifling around the internet to find some.
Still, make sure that your computer’s antivirus and defence software is up to date, and use the programs to scan any files that you download before opening the folders.
On Windows, you can scan folders for malicious files with a right-click of your mouse on the folder, and then select ‘Scan with Windows Defender,’ or your protection software of choice.
For free 2021 PES Option Files, many players turn to PES Futebol. Here, most of the files are separated into their own folders, so you’ll need to select which ones you want, follow the link on the community page, and then download from the host website.
Or, you can get a membership to PES Universe. It’s a premium PES Option File subscription which costs either £5 of £10 for the year. With a membership, you’ll be sent emails with links to their PES Option Files and continue to send updates for you to install throughout the year.
We do not accept any liability for the contents of the links clicked, we merely refer to sites considered to be reputable by the game’s community.
What do I need to install the PES 2021 Option File?

If you’re playing eFootball PES 2021 on a PlayStation 4, you’ll need a program that can unlock .rar files, with the free download software WinRAR being the program of choice. With WinRAR, however, you’ll want to be careful to remove any unwanted ticked boxes during the installation process.
You shall also need a USB stick that is compatible with your PlayStation 4. Most modern and branded USBs work with the PS4, and if you’ve been able to take screenshots from the console with a USB, the chances are that it’ll work here, too.
However, if not, you’ll need to format your USB to FAT32 manually. Check if your USB is of this format by inserting the USB into your computer, going to the ‘This PC’ folder, right-clicking on the USB Drive, and selecting ‘Properties.’ Here, under the ‘General’ tab, the file system will show its formatting.
Most modern USB drives are FAT32 by default. If your stick isn’t formatted this way, right-click on it from within the ‘This PC’ folder again, and then select ‘Format…’ In the pop-up, change the file system to the FAT option.
To get the PES Option File into a PC copy of eFootball PES 2021, all that you will need is .rar file extraction software, such as WinRAR, with the process being handled internally for PC gamers.
Can I use a PES 2021 Option File on an Xbox?

You cannot install a PES Option File on an Xbox One version of eFootball PES 2021. This is because the Microsoft console doesn’t allow for the transfer of files from a USB drive, meaning that you can’t pull from the PES Option File from within the eFootball PES 2021 game.
