Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart: Lightning Rod (Lightning Strike)

Here’re all of the details for the Lightning Rod weapon in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which becomes the Lightning Strike at Level 5.

Lightning Rod / Lightning Strike

The Lightning Rod is one of the many weapons that you can buy for Rivet and Ratchet at the Vendor, with it becoming the Lightning Strike once you’ve reached Level 5.

As with all weapons, you can unlock the Lightning Rod by purchasing it from a Vendor (shown as a green icon on each planet’s map). You can also upgrade it at the Vendor, but will need to use the weapon frequently to level it up.

Lightning Rod Official Description

“Ever feel like sticking your foes full of electrified needles? You Don’t?! But what if they caused those foes to spread the electricity around when they’re defeated? Yeah, now we’re talking!

Lightning Strike Official Description

“Charged shots electrify faster, and if enemies die while being electrified, their electricity can spread to nearby enemies.”

Lightning Rod Controls

  • Half-pull R2 to charge a shot.
  • Press R2 to fire a single bolt of electricity from the weapon.
  • Hold R2 to rapid-fire shots of electricity from the weapon.

How to Unlock and Upgrade the Lightning Rod

The Lightning Rod appears among the fifth wave of weapons that become available for sale at the Vendor, costing 8,000 bolts.

Weapons unlock as you progress, with the Lightning Rod becoming available after the Shatterbomb, The Enforcer, Mr. Fungi, Negatron Collider, Topiary Sprinkler, and Ricochet.

You can also upgrade the Lightning Rod at the Vendor, with each of its 34 upgrades costing one Raritanium apiece.

Lightning Rod Parameters

The baseline Lightning Rod has the following parameters from the moment that you make the purchase:

  • Power: 1½ out of 5
  • Range: 3 out of 5
  • Speed: 4 out of 5
  • Stun: 3 out of 5

Lightning Rod / Lightning Strike Upgrades

At Level 5, you can pay to unlock 34 blue upgrades, each of which costs one Raritanium, and subsequently unlock eight tiles of three different gold upgrades by surrounding them with blue upgrades.

Blue upgrade tiles:

  • Max Ammo x10 (increase max ammo)
  • Stun Duration x11 (increase stun duration)
  • Fire Rate x10 (shots fire at a higher rate)
  • Charge Status x3 (charged shots stun faster)

Gold upgrade tiles:

  • Auto Aim x3 (shots find their targets more easily)
  • Max Range x3 (shots travel farther)
  • Max Arcs x2 (increases the maximum number of enemies that can be electrified)

Level 5 Lightning Rod (Lightning Strike)

Once the Lightning Rod has been used enough to reach Level 5, all of its upgrades will become available, and it can become the Lightning Strike.

A 100 per cent complete, the Level 5 Lightning Strike offers full bars of Charge Status, Charge Time, Stun Duration, Fire Rate, and Max Ammo.

The Lightning Strike is a long-range weapon that quickly charges enemies into a stunned, electrified state, with that electricity spreading between nearby charged enemies and passing on to others when the foe is defeated.
