When first starting out in the Viking world of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the skill tree employed can look a little daunting. It’s mostly covered by fog, being revealed as you progress and unlock more points on the constellation styled layout.
Within the skill tree resides three sections with 13 skill clusters per section. Each cluster is packed with stat boosters and a specialised skill to add to Eivor’s arsenal of tricks, increasing your power level with each point.
Each path of the tree has a designated colour with its own specific focus:
- The blue section represents the Way of the Wolf, focusing on ranged abilities;
- The yellow section represents the Way of the Raven, focusing on stealth abilities;
- The red section represents the Way of the Bear, focusing on combat abilities.
In each of these sections also lies one adrenaline upgrade, granting you an extra slot of adrenaline for any abilities that you find within the Books of Knowledge.
In this article, we’ll be showcasing all of the skills available and highlighting which ones we think give you the best advantages in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
How to get skill points in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Skill points are awarded in a few ways during your epic journey through Norway and England, mainly as you earn experience points while playing. Instead of a standard level-up system, each time you fill the XP meter, you will be given two skill points to spend. Spending these points increases your stats or unlocks new skills as you complete each skill cluster.
Completing missions or the various mysteries around the massive open world can also gift you with skill points, giving you a much-needed boost as you advance into tougher territories.
If you’re stuck for choice and can’t decide what to spend your hard-earned points on, there is an auto-assign option labelled ‘Fate’ which lets the gods decide where your skill points are spent. Don’t worry if the fates spend them where you don’t want them, as you can reassign individual or all skill points at any time.
Once you complete the skill tree, your power level will sit at a pretty 400, making enemies quiver at the mere sight of you. Skill points then become Mastery points to spend on enhancing stats in each given path, specialising in melee, ranged, and stealth attributes.
Below, you can find all of the top skills to learn in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, as well as how to find them, followed by tables depicting every skill in each section of the skill tree.
Best skills to unlock in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
With so many different skills on offer, and most shrouded by fog, it can be difficult to determine which will skills will best assist you in your quests.
This list isn’t in any particular order and will be affected by your play style, with your selections being based on how you want to approach Eivor’s journey.
From stealth and ranged to melee skills, the following highlights the most useful skills to unlock from the Way of the Raven, Way of the Wolf, and Way of the Bear in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
Way of the Raven: Brush with Death
Dodging just before an attack lands slows enemy movements for a time.
This skill is extremely useful in combat situations, slowing enemy movements so that you can get the upper-hand on your enemies via precise counter strikes, healing, repositioning, or by letting your stamina recharge.
You can find the Brush with Death skill to the upper-left of the first skill cluster from the centre.
Way of the Raven: Counter Roll
Dodge towards enemy Rune attacks just before it lands to vault directly behind them.
This skill comes in very handy when evading heavy attacks, keeping you in close proximity to deal damage in the opening that this skill creates. It’s especially lethal when paired with the Backstab skill.
The Counter Roll skill is located on the top-left edge of the Raven section.
Way of the Raven: Advanced Assassination
Ability to assassinate high-level targets with a timing-based attack.
You can use this skill to assassinate elite enemies in one shot by simply timing your strike, keeping yourself undetected while traversing forbidden areas.
The Advanced Assassination skill is found underneath the first skill cluster of the Raven section.
Way of the Raven: Chain Assassination
After performing a successful assassination, throw an axe at a second target standing nearby.
The one-hit throwing axe kills, which follow up assassinations, look incredible and keep you hidden, removing the need to get up close to the next enemy. The Chain Assassination skill cluster is also home to an Adrenaline Upgrade, giving you one more slot of adrenaline to use and add even more value to the skill cluster.
The Chain Assassination skill is found at the bottom left of the two paths from the Advanced Assassination skill cluster.
Way of the Raven: Breakfall
Eivor automatically rolls when landing from a dangerous height, reducing the amount of damage taken.
Maybe one of the most vital skills to pick-up, Breakfall negates a severe amount of fall damage, saving endless amounts of time climbing down from tall places or surviving misplaced Leaps of Faith.
Located as the second skill cluster from the first cluster in the Raven section – directly below the Advanced Assassination skill cluster. Breakfall links to the Last Chance Healing skill cluster in the Wolf section.
Way of the Raven: Auto-Loot
Loot an enemy automatically after a melee kill or a stealth takedown.
Another time-saving skill, the Auto-Loot function doesn’t do anything fancy but will help you to rack up a fair amount of money from enemies that you kill, removing the need to loot mid-combat or run around once the dust settles.
Located to the left of the bottom skill cluster in the Raven section, Auto-Loot is just to the left of the Breakfall skill cluster.
Way of the Wolf: Arrow Reinforcement
Loosed arrows will never break and can be collected from fallen enemies.
More of a convenient skill to have than anything else, but being able to pick-up arrows from enemies or wayward shots will save plenty of time from looting or buying the consumable item.
Arrow Reinforcement is located in the top right skill cluster on the edge of the Wolf section.
Way of the Wolf: Last Chance Healing
When your health reaches a critical state in conflict, everything around you will appear to move slower, giving you time to heal or flee.
This skill is possibly the second-best skill to own in terms of survival; it’s incredibly handy to own and will see you through many more conflicts than you realise.
The Last Chance Healing skill is found in the third skill cluster down from the first skill cluster of the Wolf section. It links to the Breakfall skill cluster in the Raven section.
Way of the Wolf: Grit
Regain the red portion of your health bar when successfully landing melee hits on enemies.
The best survival skill in the game, Grit’s regenerative capabilities are outstanding, making it a must for seeing out lengthy battles against elite enemies. It also saves you from using your coveted ration packs to restore health.
Located to the right of the Last Chance Healing skill cluster, you can unlock Grit up to the right from the bottom skill cluster of the Wolf section.
Way of the Wolf: Adrenaline Upgrade
Unlock an additional Adrenaline slot.
Adrenaline is crucial in combat, not just to use your powerful abilities but to also restore your stamina. The more adrenaline that you possess, the easier the fights will become, taking you to a one-person-army level of brutality.
Located in the bottom skill cluster at the edge of the Wolf and Raven section, grabbing the Adrenaline Upgrade is a great choice.
Way of the Bear: Stomp
When an enemy falls to the ground, press R3 to stomp on their face.
The Stomp skill is pivotal in battle, dealing devastating damage to downed enemies, and giving you the ability to finish off almost all opponents with a boot to the face.
You can find Stomp in the first skill cluster from the centre of the Bear section.
Way of the Bear: Heavy Dual Wield
You can dual-wield heavy weapons. This alters the stats and handling of each weapon.
Having the Heavy Dual Wield skill unlocked increases your versatility in battle, enabling you to equip any weapon in both hands. Embrace your inner berserker and go wild with twin Dane Axes, but doing so will reduce your speed.
Located in the far-left skill cluster on the edge of the Bear and Raven section, the Heavy Dual Wield skill links to the Counter Roll skill cluster in the Raven section.
Way of the Bear: Parry Damage
Successful parries also deal damage to the attacker.
Defence is the best form of offence, and with this skill, you deal damage every time that you successfully parry an attack. The damage can also increase with certain runes that impact your Critical Damage and Critical Chance.
Parry Damage is located in the right-hand group of the first skill cluster in the Bear section.
Way of the Bear: Adrenaline Fiend
When one or more Adrenaline Slots are filled, you gain a damage boost and attack speed boost. This effect augments with each slot filled.
Offensive boosts are always useful for anyone who likes to get stuck into a good fight in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. This skill grants a boost to two very important stats in that respect, making you hit harder and faster for each bar of adrenaline filled.
You can locate Adrenalie Fiend in the third skill cluster to the right from the first skill group of the Bear section, to the right of the Parry Damage skill cluster.
An honourable mention goes to the Berserker’s Mettle skill cluster as it hosts the third and final Adrenaline Upgrade of the skill tree. It’s a fairly useful set of skills as well, with Berserker’s Mettle granting you the perk of a partially filled Adrenaline Slot not being affected by an enemy’s first strike.
That wraps up our most useful skills in each section of the Valhalla skill tree. Below, you can find the tables of all of the skills and their respective locations of the Raven, Bear, and Wolf paths.
