When you are on a high-stakes mission in GTA 5, you need to know how to be stealthy. It feels like you’re getting shot at every five minutes in this game. Crouching can mean survival in this game, whether you are on the run from the cops or trying to avoid the angry guy whose vehicle you stole and ran off a mountain.
So, how do you crouch in GTA 5? What’s the best strategy for survival?
How To Crouch in GTA 5
Crouching isn’t as simple as just hiding behind a wall. Here’s a step-by-step process for how to crouch in GTA 5.
Find an Object to Crouch Behind
When you need to hide, crouch behind an object – but not just any object. Some of them are easily destroyed by bullets, just like in real life. Find a car or corner to hide behind if you’re in the city. If you are fleeing the cops on foot in the mountains, though, find a large rock or tree to hide behind and crouch down. You will want to face the object you want as your cover so you can get a good view.
Crouch Down
Now, crouch down. If you’re on cover, your character will automatically crouch down to stay hidden. If your character is still standing as normal, you’ll need to quickly press some buttons:
- How to crouch in GTA 5 PC: Press Q
- How to crouch in GTA 5 PS 4: Press R1
- How to crouch in GTA 5 Xbox One: Press RB
Peek
You’ll want to peek around the corner or over the top of a box to see whether you’re in the clear or where your target happens to be. For those on PC, right-click on your mouse. If you’re playing from a console, hold the Aim button (or the left trigger). When you release that button, you’ll return to your crouching position.
You might want to peek, take a few quick shots if you can, then return to your crouching position so you don’t get hit by enemy fire.
Open Fire
Ready to fire? PC gamers need to left-click the mouse. Console gamers have to hold the right trigger. You can shoot from the top of the cover area or from around the side of it, whatever works best. Definitely aim before shooting for a much better chance of hitting your target.
Get the Heck Outta There
When it is time to leave your cover area, hit the Q, R1, or RB button once again. This takes you out of cover mode and lets you make a mad dash for it. If you do this enough times, it will become second nature.

Crouch Mods for GTA 5
GTA 5 modders have created crouch mods, such as Stance – Crouch/Prone mod, which debuted a few years ago. They give you a better range of tactical stances like what you see in first-person shooter games. Stance mods are highly downloaded since they really enhance gameplay.
Learning how to crouch in GTA 5 is – sometimes literally – a lifesaver. Adding the mods in can make gameplay even more engaging. Even without the mods, crouching is essential to successful gameplay.
