Arguably the most vital role in the team, the goalkeeper has always been the most scrutinised position in football. In modern times, goalkeepers are more and more required to be as good with their feet as they are with their hands, with Manuel Neuer and Ederson being the stand-out keepers capable of picking a pass and sweeping up any danger to their defence. In this article, you will find all of the best young GKs in FIFA 23’s Career Mode.
Choosing FIFA 23 Career Mode’s best young goalkeepers (best GK)
In this article, you will find all of the biggest young talents in world football who play in goal, with Gianluigi Donnarumma, Alban Lafont, and Gregor Kobel headlining the list.
In order to assemble this list, the players must be, at most, 24-years-old and be listed as a GK in FIFA 23. Once these players have been established, they are sorted by their highest predicted overall rating.
At the bottom of the article, you will find a fully detailed list of all of the predicted best goalkeepers in FIFA 23.
Gianluigi Donnarumma (88 OVR – 92 POT)
Team: Paris Saint-Germain
Age: 23
Wage: £96,000 p/w
Value: £103 million
Best Attributes: 91 GK Diving, 90 GK Reflexes, 85 GK Positioning
The first-choice goalkeeper for the Italian 2020 Euro-winning side, Gianluigi Donnarumma unsurprisingly tops the list of the best young goalkeepers in FIFA 23 Career Mode. After joining French giants Paris Saint-Germain on a free in 2021, from AC Milan, the young goalkeeper became one of the most valuable free transfers in history, winning the Ligue 1 in his debut campaign.
Demonstrating that he is the rightful heir to Gianluigi Buffon’s throne, Donnarumma was in sensational form during Euro 2020. Being only 22-years-old at the games, the wonderkid conceded just four goals in the entire tournament. Given an overall rating of 88 and a predicted potential of 92 on FIFA 23, it is clear to see that Donnarumma is set to be one of the greatest goalkeepers of his generation.
Establishing himself as Milan’s number-one keeper from the age of just 16, it has always been evident that the Castellammare di Stabia-native had a big future ahead of him. With 91 GK diving, 90 GK reflexes, 85 GK positioning, 85 reactions, 83 GK handling on last year’s game, and plenty of time to improve these already world-beating stats, signing Donnarumma on FIFA 23 Career Mode means that you won’t have to worry about securing another goalkeeper for at least another decade.
Last season, Donnarumma had to share game time with teammate Keylor Navas and in total made 24 appearances across all competitions for the French giants. In the current season, the Italian has played every minute of every game for the Parisian club under Christophe Galtier, solidifying his place as PSG’s undisputed first choice keeper.
Gregor Kobel (79 OVR – 84 POT)
Team: Borussia Dortmund
Age: 24
Wage: £30,500 p/w
Value: £18.5 million
Best Attributes: 83 GK Reflexes, 81 Strength, 80 GK Diving
To the Bundesliga now, and Borussia Dortmund’s number-one Gregor Kobel comes second in this list. Joining Yellow Submarine in the summer of 2021 for €15m, Kobel is the second most expensive goalkeeper in Bundesliga history following his move from VfB Stuttgart.
Given his first-team debut at Hoffenheim by then manager Julian Nagelsmann, Kobel was loaned out to Bundesliga rivals Augsburg in order to get game time. The Swiss national subsequently played a vital part in keeping his loan team from being relegated, helping them to finish 15th.
On FIFA 23, Kobel has been given a predicted potential rating of 84, and being only 24-years -old, there is plenty of time for this 6’5” keeper to reach this ceiling. His 83 GK reflexes and 80 GK diving on last year’s game are among his biggest strengths but his other ratings are solid, too, with 78 GK handling, 77 GK kicking, and 77 reactions.
Given his first senior international cap at the beginning of September 2021, the Zurich native has made a further two caps for his country at the time of writing and is set to take over as Switzerland’s first-choice goalkeeper, replacing now 33-year-old Yann Sommer. With this in mind and a high potential to reach, Kobel would be a wise investment on FIFA 23 Career Mode.
He played 40 times across all competitions in the 2021/22 season, keeping 11 clean sheets for the German side. He has already kept four clean sheets in six appearances across all competitions this season and is set to better last season’s record by a comfortable margin.
Alban Lafont (78 OVR – 83 POT)
Team: FC Nantes
Age: 23
Wage: £15,000 p/w
Value: £15 million
Best Attributes: 82 GK Reflexes, 80 GK Diving, 76 GK Handling
Being captain of a first-tier football club is an accolade in itself, but being chosen to lead the team at just 22-years-old speaks volumes for how well young Alban Lafont is perceived at club FC Nantes. This is reiterated in FIFA 23 Career Mode, where he will be given the Leadership trait.
After joining Les Jaunes et Verts from Italian side Fiorentina in a £6.5m deal in the summer of 2021 – having been on-loan with them the previous season – Lafont made it clear from the first day at the club that he was going to play a key role.
On FIFA 23, Lafont should receive 82 GK reflexes, 80 GK diving, 76 GK handling, 74 GK positioning, and 73 jumping. Given that he only has a rating of 69 for his GK kicking on last year’s game, playing it short from a goal kick is not necessarily a bad way to utilise him.
Having made 39 total appearances for Nantes in the 2021/22 season and keeping nine clean sheets, Lafont has played in all eight league appearances for Nantes so far this season, keeping only two clean sheet.
Altay Bayındır (77 OVR – 84 POT)
Team: Fenerbahçe SK
Age: 24
Wage: £24,500 p/w
Value: £15.5 million
Best Attributes: 81 GK Reflexes, 79 GK Diving, 77 GK Positioning
The tallest net-minder on this list is Turkish first-choice Altay Bayındır. Playing his football in the Turkish first division with Fenerbahçe SK, this 6’6” giant is an imposing figure between the sticks.
Bayındır has already featured for Fenerbahçe 113 times since making his debut for the 19-time Turkish Champions in the 2019/20 season, keeping 32 clean sheets in the process. He is also a Turkish international with four caps.
With 81 GK reflexes, 79 GK diving, 77 GK positioning, 73 GK handling, and 71 GK kicking on last year’s game, Bayındır is a solid all-rounder. Covering most of the distance between the sticks due to his size, beating this Bursa-native on FIFA 23 Career Mode isn’t an easy feat.
Given an overall rating of 77 on FIFA 23, Bayındır would be the first-choice goalkeeper for most top division sides competing for European football. With a potential rating of 84, the Turkish international has a lot of room for growth and will likely be a player of Champions League quality when he reaches his ceiling in FIFA 23 Career Mode.
The Turkey international made 29 total appearances in the 2021/22 season and with 11 clean sheets. This season, the 24-year-old has made 12 appearances for the Turkish giants across all competitions and already has four clean sheets.
Illan Meslier (77 OVR – 85 POT)
Team: Leeds United
Age: 22
Wage: £29,000 p/w
Value: £17.5 million
Best Attributes: 81 GK Reflexes, 79 GK Diving, 76 GK Handling
Next on the list is number-one goalkeeper for Leeds United, French-born Illan Meslier, who is the youngest player on this list.
Handed his first-team debut for his hometown club Lorient at just 18-years-old in the 2018/19 season, Meslier made 30 appearances in Ligue 2 before helping FC Lorient secure promotion to Ligue 1. Meslier’s performances caught the eye of Leeds, who signed the youngster for a sum of £5.85 million that summer.
Since arriving at Elland Road, the Frenchman has helped Leeds to secure promotion and become their first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League due to his impressive form. On FIFA 23, Meslier has been given a potential overall of 85.
Excelling with his 81 GK reflexes, the young goalkeeper uses his 6’5” frame to great effect. Also possessing 79 GK diving, 76 GK handling, 73 GK positioning, and 73 GK kicking at the age of just 22 on last year’s game, it is clear that this wonderkid would be a solid investment for the future of your team on FIFA 23 Career Mode.
In four seasons with Whites, the Frenchman has been in goal 150 times, keeping 26 clean sheets. Seven of those appearances have come this season and he will look to play a key role in helping Leeds stay afloat once again in the Premier League.
Florian Müller (77 OVR – 82 POT)
Team: VfB Stuttgart
Age: 24
Wage: £15,000 p/w
Value: £11 million
Best Attributes: 81 GK Reflexes, 76 GK Diving, 75 Reactions
Back to the Bundesliga and VfB Stuttgart now, where young German goalkeeper Florian Müller is plying his trade having joined Die Schwaben this summer from rivals FSV Mainz 05.
After a successful season on-loan at SC Freiburg, Müller signed for Stuttgart in the summer of 2021 for £4.3 million and immediately became their first-choice goalkeeper. The 24-year-old is in his second season at the club and has been in goal for 37 games, with a total of five clean sheets kept in that period. The left-footer has been given a rating of 77 on FIFA 23 and has the potential to reach 82.
With 82 GK reflexes and 75 reactions, Müller is very quick to react to shots coming his way, making it difficult to get the better of him without creating something special.
Thanks to his 76 GK diving, 74 GK handling, and 73 GK positioning on last year’s game, you have a great foundation to nurture this Saarlouis-native into a fantastic goalkeeper. However, due to the fact that he has only just joined Stuttgart, you will have to wait until the January transfer window to sign him on your FIFA 23 Career Mode.
Justin Bijlow (77 OVR – 85 POT)
Team: Feyenoord
Age: 24
Wage: £6,400 p/w
Value: £17.5 million
Best Attributes: 80 GK Diving, 78 GK Reflexes, 77 GK Kicking
Finishing off the list is 24-year-old Dutch goalkeeper Justin BIjlow. With a predicted potential ability of 85, and a value of just £17.5 million, the Dutch champion is the best option for you if you are looking to get the most cost-effective player on this list on FIFA 23 Career Mode.
Having been at Feyenoord since 2006, Bijlow is well-known and held in high regarde in Rotterdam. With Giovanni van Bronckhorst handing him his first senior cap at just 19-years-old, this young goalkeeper clearly has a bright future.
Bijlow has gone on to make 93 first-team appearances for his boyhood club, keeping 35 clean sheets in that time. Clearly Bijlow has talent, and in FIFA 23 this is made evident by his potential ability.
With 80 GK diving, 78 GK reflexes, 77 GK kicking, 75 GK handling, 75 reactions, and 73 GK positioning on last year’s game, as well as his 85 potential ability, signing this wonderkid would be a superb idea on your FIFA 23 Career Mode.
Bijlow is still seen as the first choice goalkeeper at Feyenoord under new manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, with eight appearances made and five clean sheets kept in all competitions in the current campaign.
