Choosing FIFA 20 Career Mode’s best cheap high potential centre midfielders (CM)
The most important metric when considering the best high potential young centre midfielders in FIFA 20 Career Mode is the potential overall rating.
Those that feature in the body of the article have the highest potential rating. The others listed in the table at the foot of the report have a rating of at least 82 POT. The centre midfielders included have a release clause of £5 million or less.
We have excluded players who are currently on-loan at other clubs. The likes of Martin Ødegaard (Real Sociedad), Takefusa Kubo (RCD Mallorca), and Giovani Lo Celso (Tottenham Hotspur) won’t feature on this list.

Billy Gilmour (OVR 66 – POT 86)

Team: Chelsea FC
Best Position: CM, CAM
Age: 18
Overall/Potential: 66 OVR / 86 POT
Value (Release Clause): £1.2 million (£3.4 million)
Wage: £7.3k per week
Best Attributes: 76 Agility, 75 Balance, 74 Short Pass
The first option with the highest potential rating is a Chelsea midfielder, Billy Gilmour. A native of Irvine, Gilmour has been with the South London club since 2017, having developed in the Rangers Academy.
Since joining Chelsea, Gilmour has been a player of interest, rising through the ranks at the club. The Scotland U21 international made his first Premier League appearance by coming off the bench against Sheffield United this season.
Gilmour has the skill set that you desire from a centre midfielder, boasting good agility (76), balance (75), short pass (74), and long pass (72). The Scot isn’t particularly quick, but what he does with ball at his feet is what will drive players to sign Gilmour.
To sign the Chelsea midfielder, you’ll have to pay his £3.4 million release clause: a small price to pay for someone who could make an immediate impact at a second division side in FIFA 20 Career Mode.
Thomas Doyle (OVR 62 – POT 85)

Team: Manchester City
Best Position: CM
Age: 17
Overall/Potential: 62 OVR / 85 POT
Value (Release Clause): £600,000 (£1.7 million)
Wage: £1.9k per week
Best Attributes:, 79 Balance, 69 Short Pass, 68 Stamina
The next player on our list also comes from the Premier League, this time from up north at Manchester City. He is Thomas Doyle. Doyle currently captains the U23 side in Premier League 2, making 18 appearances for them this season.
He has also featured in the UEFA Youth League, in which he has started in all of City’s fixtures. The Manchester-native has also had the privilege of captaining the national team at U19 level.
Doyle has the lowest ratings of these CMs. However, he can increase his overall to 85, which demonstrates the most growth amongst players on our list.
The Englishman has solid physical ability in FIFA 20 with his 79 balance being the standout. That said, his 69 passing and 64 vision should hold Doyle in suitable regard for your team.
Marcos Antonio (OVR 65 – POT 85)

Team: Shakhtar Donetsk
Best Position: CM
Age: 19
Overall/Potential: 65 OVR / 85 POT
Value (Release Clause): £1 million (£3.1 million)
Wage: £2.7k per week
Best Attributes: 78 Balance, 73 Acceleration, 73 Vision
We head to Ukraine for our next prospect, namely, Shakhtar Donetsk: a club that’s known for giving Brazilian players a pathway into European football. A player on their books who will intrigue FIFA players is Marcos Antonio.
Antonio joined the Ukrainian giants in 2019 after a seven-month spell at Portuguese club Estoril. This season, the Brazilian has made 13 appearances in the Premier Liga and six times in European competitions for Shakhtar.
For those looking for more flair in their central midfield, Antonio offers good speed with 73 acceleration and 72 sprint. He also offers good balance (78) and stamina (71) to run out games.
To bring in the Brazilian, you’ll need to pay the £3.1 million release clause.
Lucien Agoume (OVR 63 – POT 85)

Team: Inter Milan
Best Position: CM
Age: 17
Overall/Potential: 63 OVR / 85 POT
Value (Release Clause): £725,000 (£1.9 million)
Wage: £1.2k per week
Best Attributes: 69 Vision, 68 Acceleration, 67 Agility
The only player from Serie A to grace this list is France U18 captain Lucien Agoume. The Cameroon-born player signed with Inter Milan last summer, joining from Ligue 2 side FC Sochaux-Montbéliard.
Agoume has only featured twice for Antonio Conte’s side, making his debut in a six-minute cameo during the 1-1 draw against Fiorentina. He has spent most of his time with the U19 team, featuring in the UEFA Youth League.
Stats wise, Agoume has reliable numbers across the board. His physical attributes are his best, with the 68 acceleration, 67 agility, and 67 strength making Agoume a physical presence in the heart of midfield.
Agoume shares a lot of similarities with the next player on our list.
James Garner (OVR 66 – POT 85)

Team: Manchester United
Best Position: CDM, CM
Age: 18
Overall/Potential: 66 OVR / 85 POT
Value (Release Clause): £1.1 million (£2.7 million)
Wage: £5.8k per week
Best Attributes: 70 Composure, 69 Sprint Speed, 68 Acceleration
The last player on our list is the second to come from a Manchester club, this time from United’s academy. James Garner has the equal highest rating alongside Billy Gilmour on our list.
Garner has had an excellent season for United’s U23 side, with ten appearances and eight goals in Premier League 2 – a superb contribution for a centre midfielder. Like Thomas Doyle, Garner has represented England’s U19 side.
When scouting Garner, you’ll notice that none his statistics jump out as being significantly better than the others. He is solid across the board, with Garner’s mental stats being among his strengths.
Garner is the quickest Premier League-based player on this list, boasting 69 sprint speed and 68 acceleration. He’s certainly an option for players looking for quickness in the middle of the park.
