Whether it’s playing with a back four or with wing-backs either side of a back three, the left back plays a vital role in the team set-up.
Finding a left back who is quick to help in attack and who can hold up in defensive situations is very important.
For FIFA 20 Career Mode, finding a left back with high potential will be a rewarding long-term investment.
The top-five low cost, high potential left backs in FIFA 20 feature below. A list of your other potential options is listed at the foot of the article.
Choosing FIFA 20 Career Mode’s best cheap high potential left backs (LB)
The most important metric when considering the best high potential young left back in FIFA 20 Career Mode is the potential overall rating.
Those that feature in the body of the article have the highest potential rating. The others listed in the table at the foot of the report have a rating of at least 79 POT. The left backs included have a release clause of £5 million or less.
We have excluded players who are currently on-loan to other clubs. The likes of Reguilón [OVR 80 – POT 87] (Sevilla), Cucurella [OVR 79 – POT 88] (Getafe CF) and Angeliño [OVR 78 – POT 83] (RB Leipzig) won’t be on our list. We’ve also excluded players who featured in our list on of high potential right-backs.

Joško Gvardiol (OVR 67 – POT 85)
Team: Dinamo Zagreb
Best Position: CB, LB
Overall/Potential: 67 OVR / 85 POT
Value (Release Clause): £1.3 million (£3.6 million)
Best Attributes: 82 Strength, 81 Jumping, 80 Sprint Speed
Joško Gvardiol features on our list of the top five high potential centre-backs. Now, the Croatian is top of the pile as he is one of the best cheap left backs with a high POT rating.
The Dinamo Zagreb defender has had a massive influence in the progression of the Croatian side in the UEFA Youth League.
If you choose to play Gvardiol, you’ll have someone who boasts excellent physical strength (82) to protect possession and outmuscle opponents to win the ball. Gvardiol can also hold his own when tracking speedy wingers, with 80 sprint speed and 71 acceleration.
The main question is whether to play him at centre-back or left back.
Noah Katterbach (OVR 67 – POT 84)
Team: FC Köln
Best Position: LB
Overall/Potential: 67 OVR / 84 POT
Value (Release Clause): £1.4 million (£3.1 million)
Best Attributes: 75 Sprint Speed, 74 Acceleration, 73 Balance
Having broken into the FC Köln first team under Achim Beierlorzer, and after recovering from a muscle injury, Noah Katterbach retained the starting left back role once Markus Gisdol took charge of the struggling Geißböcke.
The emergence of Katterbach has allowed Jonas Hector to shift from his starting left back position to play a significant role in midfield.
Katterbach has made 13 appearances this season, with his debut coming on match day seven in Köln’s 1-1 draw with Schalke.
The German specialises at LB, however, those who play with three centre-backs can exploit Katterbach’s solid pace and balance at LWB. Not only that, but Katterbach has a 67 overall rating for his defending, making him one of the best available on this list.
At the end of April, Katterbach extended his contract with Köln, tying him down until 2024. However, in FIFA 20, Katterbach is in the final year of his deal at the club that developed him.
Manu Sánchez (OVR 64 – POT 83)
Team: Atlético Madrid
Best Position: LB
Overall/Potential: 64 OVR / 83 POT
Value (Release Clause): £765,000 (£2 million)
Best Attributes: 68 Acceleration, 67 Sprint Speed, 66 Balance
The lowest rated, regarding OVR, on our list so far has the most significant growth potential, coming in the form of Atlético Madrid defender Manu Sánchez.
The Spaniard has spent most of the 2019/20 season with Atlético Madrid B, making 23 appearances.
Sánchez did make his first-team debut this season, playing 63 minutes in a 2-0 victory over CA Osasuna.
Sánchez isn’t the quickest on our list, but he does have decent ratings of 64 for ball control and 63 for his crossing. The Spaniard is good at his defensive duties with 65 sliding tackle and 61 defensive awareness.
The Spaniard has plenty of room to grow, but his starting ratings might scare some FIFA 20 players away from signing the Atlético Madrid left back.
Alexandro Bernabéi (OVR 67 – POT 83)
Team: Club Atlético Lanús
Best Position: LB, LW, LM
Overall/Potential: 67 OVR / 83 POT
Value (Release Clause): £1.4 million (£2.9 million)
Best Attributes: 89 Acceleration, 89 Sprint Speed, 87 Agility
If you are looking for a left back that’s overflowing with pace and is based outside of the confines of Europe, Alexandro Bernabéi is your player.
Bernabéi plays in the Argentine Superliga, in which he has made 13 appearances with Club Atlético Lanús.
Bernabéi has excellent physical attributes from the outset, featuring 89 sprint speed and acceleration to accompany his 87 balance and agility. Bernabéi is also durable with a rating of 81 stamina.
The Argentine can be an excellent option at LB. However, if you wish to be more aggressive, you can use Bernabéi at LWB, LM, or at LW as a part of an attacking trio.
Bernabéi is a diamond in the rough signing if you’re willing to bring the Argentine into your FIFA 20 Career Mode.
Melvin Bard (OVR 65 – POT 82)
Team: Olympique Lyonnais
Best Position: LB
Overall/Potential: 65 OVR / 82 POT
Value (Release Clause): £900k (£2.3 million)
Best Attributes: 79 Balance, 78 Sprint Speed, 77 Acceleration
Our last featured player who provides an exciting option at left back is Lyon’s Melvin Bard. The Frenchman has only been given a taste of playing at Ligue 1 level so far, playing 45 minutes in a 4-0 win over Nîmes Olympique.
Where Bard has been prominent for Lyon is in their UEFA Youth League campaign, starting all six fixtures.
Bard has strong technical skills with 66 standing tackle and 65 sliding tackle, making the Frenchman a reasonable defensive left back. The 18-year-old also has good ball control (67) and can take the game on with his 70 dribbling.
Bard would be an excellent option if you’re doing a FIFA 20 Career Mode with a Ligue 2 side; he’s one who can develop into a reliable left back if you can gain promotion early.
