FIFA 21: Best Target Men to Sign on Career Mode

They can hold-up the play and dominate in the air; these are the best target men in FIFA 21.

In an era of fast and flashy forwards, the art of the target man has arguably been lost in today’s game. However, both in real-life and in FIFA 21, a target man can be a real asset to a team, either to hold-up the ball and bring other attacking players into the play, or through their prowess in the air.

The target man still suits a particular style of play and, when used as a centre forward, can knock balls to the outside for surging wingers. They can also be deployed as a substitute to add variety to your attacking approach late in a game.

Here, we’re going through all of the highest-rated target men for you to sign to your Career Mode team.

Finding the best FIFA 21 target men

The best target men excel because of their height, strength, and ability in the air. Their ability to convert crosses into headed goals, chest the ball down, hold-up the play, and hold-off opposing players when on the ball are all essential attributes for target men.

So, to help you find the best target man for your FIFA 21 Career Mode, we have compiled a list of all of the strikers who fit the description above, sorted by their overall ratings, with the potential ratings also listed.

Read on for an in-depth look at the five best target men in the game. At the foot of the article, you will find a table with a full list of all of the best target men in FIFA 21.

Zlatan Ibrahimović (83 OVR – 83 POT)

Team: AC Milan
Best Position: ST
Age: 38-years-old
Overall/Potential: 83 OVR / 83 POT
Value (Release Clause): £11 million
Height: 6’5’’
Best Attributes: 91 Positioning, 90 Shot Power, 90 Composure

In January 2020, Zlatan Ibrahimović moved to AC Milan after spending two seasons with LA Galaxy. Something of a nomad, he has played for eight teams in six of the world’s top leagues, including the Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A.

Much has been written about Ibrahimović, but perhaps all that is worth mentioning is his longevity. The Swede has demonstrated a remarkable ability to score goals throughout his career, reaching double figures in every season since 2001, bar 2005/06. He has also twice averaged over a goal per game.

That said, at 38-years-old, Ibrahimović is not one of the quickest or most nimble players in the game, but his attacking attributes speak for themselves.

Thanks to his 91 positioning, 86 finishing, 90 shot power, and 88 long shots, he is extremely dangerous with the ball at his feet near the opposition’s penalty box.

Wout Weghorst (81 OVR – 81 POT)

Team: VfL Wolfsburg
Best Position: ST
Age: 27-years-old
Overall/Potential: 81 OVR / 81 POT
Value: £25 million
Height: 6’6’’
Best Attributes: 88 Heading Accuracy, 86 Finishing, 86 Strength

The Dutch forward made the move from his homeland, the Netherlands, to Germany in the summer of 2018 to play for VfL Wolfsburg. Their interest in him was understandable, because Wout Weghorst has consistently scored goals throughout his career, reaching double figures in the last five league campaigns.

Even though he averages almost a goal in every other game throughout the course of his professional career, Weghorst has only played for the Dutch national side four times, and once for the under-21s. Still, at 28-years-old, he should still have several years left as a high-level performer.

Weghorst is the epitome of a powerful player, with 84 shot power, 86 strength, 85 stamina, and 83 aggression. The downside to his powerful presence is a lack of movement, with Weghorst’s ratings in that department being lacklustre: 72 sprint speed, 63 agility, 57 acceleration, and 44 balance.

Artem Dzyuba (79 OVR – 79 POT)

Team: Zenit St. Petersburg
Best Position: ST
Age: 31-years-old
Overall/Potential: 79 OVR / 79 POT
Value: £13.5 million
Height: 6’5”
Best Attributes: 93 Strength, 87 Heading Accuracy, 83 Penalties

Artem Dzyuba has bounced around the Russian Premier League, with the veteran currently playing for Zenit St. Petersburg. However, despite being on the wrong side of his 30th birthday, the Russian enjoyed a prolific campaign last season, scoring 17 goals and creating 14 assists in the league.

Over the course of his career, Dzyuba has played over 350 games in the Russian top division and has featured for his country 47 times, scoring an impressive 26 goals in the process.

Unfortunately, as the Russian Premier League is included in the ‘Rest of the World’ in FIFA 21, finding Dzyuba isn’t always a straightforward task. Should you want to add him to your Career Mode, the easiest way to find him will be by searching for his name, rather than finding his club.

Dzyuba’s stand-out ratings are his 93 strength, 87 heading accuracy, 81 penalties, and his 81 finishing. Unsurprisingly, he is dominant in the air, but there is more to his game than just aerial power.

When he holds up the play, his 77 vision and 77 short passing should ensure that he distributes the ball effectively to his teammates.

Olivier Giroud (79 OVR – 79 POT)

Team: Chelsea
Best Position: ST
Age: 33-years-old
Overall/Potential: 79 OVR / 79 POT
Value: £10 million
Height: 6’4’’
Best Attributes: 90 Heading Accuracy, 88 Strength, 84 Shot Power

An impressive season for Montpellier in 2011/12 saw Olivier Giroud earn a move to London to join Arsenal, where he spent six seasons before crossing the capital to join his current club, Chelsea. Unusually, however, Giroud plays more regularly for France than his club.

Since making his debut for France in 2011, at the age of 25, Giroud has made over 100 appearances for his country, scoring over 40 goals and has only been left sitting on the bench four times in nine years. In contrast, Giroud played just 18 times for Chelsea last season, despite being fit throughout the season.

Giroud’s aerial threat is immediately evident thanks to his 90 heading accuracy, 88 strength, 82 jumping, and 82 positioning. Also worth noting is Giroud’s 81 volleying, 81 ball control, and 82 finishing, which combine to make him a more complete striker.

Where Giroud suffers is predominantly in his lack of movement and stamina. He has just 54 agility, 53 balance, 40 acceleration, 39 sprint speed, and 54 stamina.

Bas Dost (78 OVR – 78 POT)

Team: Eintracht Frankfurt
Best Position: ST
Age: 31-years-old
Overall/Potential: 78 OVR / 78 POT
Value: £10.5 million
Height: 6’5’’
Best Attributes: 92 Heading Accuracy, 91 Strength, 90 Penalties

After scoring 32 goals in 34 games for SC Heerenveen in 2011/12, Bas Dost was snapped up by Wolfsburg. He then enjoyed a spell playing for Sporting CP in Portugal before returning to Germany to sign for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Throughout his career, Dost has scored goals. Over the course of 445 games he scored 231 goals, which averages out at just over a goal in every other game. Perhaps unsurprisingly, over 60 of those goals have been from headers.

With three statistics over 90, Dost is among the highest-rated players in FIFA 21 in the areas where he’s strongest. The Deventer-native has 92 heading accuracy, 91 strength, and 90 penalties, and you can rely on him to be in the right place at the right time thanks to his 87 positioning.

Unfortunately, the Dutchman is not quite the complete striker. Where he struggles, as is the case with several players on this list, is with his movement, with his 50 sprint speed, 34 agility, and 32 balance making him rather immobile. His 49 jumping is also below par.
