In recent memory, France has been blessed with riches of world class talent. This was typified with the nation’s World Cup win back in 2018, which came 20 years after they first won the tournament.
France have had unbelievable players in all positions. In attack, the likes of Thierry Henry frightened Premier League and La Liga defence with his pure class and technical ability. Now Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane was a machine in midfield, and his incredible play with the ball at his feet was like poetry in motion. Even the likes of Marcel Desailly, Patrick Viera and Eric Cantona were all world class in their own rights.
Now we take a look at the next set of French wonderkids to sign for your FIFA 21 Career Mode. At the foot of the article are all of the best French wonderkids in FIFA 21 with those with the highest overall potential rating featuring in the body.
Choosing FIFA 21 Career Mode’s Best French Wonderkids
The main point of emphasis when selecting a wonderkid is looking at their Potential rating once a player has fully developed. For our French wonderkids piece, we decided to focus on players who are 21 years or under and have a Potential overall rating of 81 or above.
The French wonderkids who feature in the body have the highest overall potential rating in FIFA 21 while those that fit the criteria are in the table at the foot.
Kylian Mbappé (OVR 90 – POT 95)
Team: Paris Saint-Germain
Overall Rating: 90
Value (Release Clause): £167M (No Release Clause)
Wage: £140K a week
Best Attributes: 96 Acceleration, 96 Sprint Speed, 92 Dribbling
Is there a bigger player in French football right now than Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappé? I wouldn’t think so after another strong Ligue 1 campaign and more domestic glory with the Parisian side.
It’s crazy to think that five years ago, Mbappé burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old for Monaco. Now he is coming off an 18-goal league campaign in just 20 appearances thanks to a shortened season. Already, he has two goals in three Ligue 1 fixtures this season.
FIFA players know exactly what they are getting with Mbappé in their side – excellent Dribbling (92) and lighting pace with 96 Acceleration and Sprint Speed. He also has Agility, Reactions and Attacking Position all above 90.
Mbappé is a wonderkid in every sense, and at 21 he is on the verge of becoming the world’s best. In FIFA 21, if you can afford you must do anything you can to try to get Mbappé in your side.
Dayot Upamecano (OVR 79 – POT 90)
Team: RB Leipzig
Best Position: CB
Overall/Potential: 79 OVR / 90 POT
Value (Release Clause): £33M (£62.7M )
Wage: £32K a week
Best Attributes: 90 Strength, 88 Jumping, 84 Sprint Speed
With the transfer deadline closing on Monday night, one player who was expected to leave well before the window closed was Dayot Upamecano. But indicative of Arsenal since the end of the Wenger era, they couldn’t close the deal on the talented young Frenchman.
Instead, Upamecano will continue to develop into the excellent centre-back he is and spearhead one of the best defences in the Bundesliga. Last season, Upamecano logged in 2,359 minutes in 28 Bundesliga appearances.
Strong, powerful and athletic is the best way to describe Upamecano in FIFA 21. 90 Strength, 88 Jumping and 84 Sprint are fantastic assets to have for a centre-back. It allows the Frenchman to battle a physical striker and challenge those who are more pacey.
21 is generally the end of the label wonderkid and the beginning of becoming a superstar or elite player in world football. Whilst Upamecano hasn’t enjoyed domestic success in Germany, he has already become a star in the league. If you are looking for a centre-back, you could do worse than Upamecano.
Ibrahima Konaté (OVR 78 – POT 88)
Team: RB Leipzig
Best Position: CB
Overall/Potential: 78 OVR / 88 POT
Value (Release Clause): £26.5M (£50.3M )
Wage: £29K a week
Best Attributes: 85 Stand Tackle, 83 Strength, 79 Sprint Speed
Ibrahima Konaté is perhaps the hard luck story in our top five, but the talent he has is more than apparent. Konaté has been struck down by injuries on numerous occasions in his Leipzig career so far.
Last season, Konaté only managed 11 appearances in all competitions with the Parisian sidelined on two separate occasions. When he did play in the Bundesliga in particular, Leipzig took an average of 2.38 points per game, thus showcasing his importance to Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
In many ways, Konaté is very similar to his Leipzig teammate in Upamecano with the major difference being that his best attribute is the Standing Tackle (85). Konaté is relatively strong with 83 Strength and he has solid pace with a 79 Sprint Speed.
Konaté is the cheaper of the two Leipzig defenders but this doesn’t make him any less of a player. The Parisian can be a great option for your FIFA 21 Career Mode.
Rayan Cherki (OVR 67 – POT 88)
Team: Olympique Lyonnais
Best Position: CAM
Overall/Potential: 67 OVR / 88 POT
Value (Release Clause): £2.9M (No Release Clause)
Wage: £2K a week
Best Attributes: 81 Balance, 76 Agility, 75 Dribbling
The second Ligue 1 player to feature on our list is attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki. The former French U16 international is the youngest player in the top five and has already began to feature in the first team.
Cherki became the third youngest Lyon player to make his debut behind Willem Geubbels in 2017 and Joël Fréchet, who debuted at 15. The young Frenchman made six appearances last season in Ligue 1 – he has already matched that total this season.
Cherki starts off with positive off the ball attributes. 81 Balance and 76 Agility are very useful, especially if you opt to play the Lyon midfielder in wider areas. His 75 Dribbling is great start point for a 17-year old and this point of emphasis will develop even further during your Career Mode save.
If you’re feeling bold, try to buy Cherki straight off the bat. He will continue to develop with training and could be your attacking midfielder for the future and someone to keep for either a significant period or sell for a massive fee.
Eduardo Camavinga (OVR 76 – POT 88)
Team: Stade Rennais FC
Best Position: CM
Overall/Potential: 76 OVR / 88 POT
Value (Release Clause): £15.5M (No Release Clause)
Wage: £4.8K a week
Best Attributes: 79 Stamina, 79 Composure, 79 Short Pass
Those who watch Ligue 1 frequently or are constantly analysing up-and-coming talents will know who Eduardo Camavinga is. Camavinga has been a regular feature at Stade Rennais after making his Ligue 1 debut at 15.
Stade Rennais had their best season in Ligue 1 for more than a decade last season in finishing third, something which ensured Champions League football would be coming to the Roazhon Park. Camavinga played a massive role in the side from Brittany reaching the pinnacle of European football.
As a 76 overall rated player, Camavinga has a strong starting base as a central midfielder. 79 Stamina, 79 Composure and 79 Short Pass are important stats when having a player in that area of the pitch. They must be durable, composed and of course a good distributor of the ball. With more development, Camavinga can be a star in midfield.
Camavinga is an exciting wonderkid and one, based on his player value, who is very gettable. Like Cherki, Camavinga would be a great investment for your FIFA 21 Career Mode team.
