Goalkeepers shoulder a huge responsibility and can be the difference between picking up a point or even the win in a game which shouldn’t warrant such result.
The top-five low cost, high potential goalkeepers in FIFA 20 feature below. A complete list of all of the other potential options is at the foot of the article.
Choosing FIFA 20 Career Mode’s best cheap high potential goalkeepers (GK)
The most important metric when considering the best high potential young goalkeeper in FIFA 20 Career Mode is the potential overall rating.
Those that feature in the body of the article have the highest potential rating. The others listed in the table have a rating of at least 79 POT. The goalkeepers included all have a release clause of £5 million or less.
We have excluded players who are currently on-loan at other clubs. As such, the likes of Dean Henderson (Sheffield United), Andriy Lunin (Real Oviedo), and Alban Lafont (FC Nantes) won’t feature on the list.

Maarten Vandevoordt (OVR 66 – POT 85)
Team: KRC Genk
Best Position: GK
Age: 17
Overall/Potential: 66 OVR / 88 POT
Value (Release Clause): £950,000 (£2.1 million)
Wage: £450 per week
Best Attributes: 69 GK Reflexes, 68 GK Diving, 66 GK Handling
The highest potential goalkeeper available on our list is KRC Genk’s Maarten Vandevoordt. The Belgian U19 international has featured for his club’s first-team on four occasions, being the back-up to 21-year-old Gaëtan Coucke.
Vandevoordt holds the record as the youngest goalkeeper to start in a Champions League match at 17 years and 287 days old. The result was a 4-0 defeat to Napoli.
In FIFA 20 Career Mode, Vandevoordt offers a solid starting point. With ratings that are just under 70 in reflexes, diving, and handling, the Belgian is an excellent option if you can afford him.
His buy-out clause of £2.1 million at 66 OVR might make him a little pricey. However, his development arc is positive enough to bring Vandevoordt into your side.
Lucas Chevalier (OVR 61 – POT 84)
Team: LOSC Lille
Best Position: GK
Age: 17
Overall/Potential: 61 OVR / 84 POT
Value (Release Clause): £425,000 (£1.2 million)
Wage: £450 per week
Best Attributes: 62 GK Reflexes, 62 GK Kicking, 60 GK Diving
For those playing with a team in the lower leagues looking for a keeper to build around, perhaps LOSC Lille’s Lucas Chevalier will catch your fancy.
A native of Calais, Chevalier has been on the books at Lille since 2014 and has risen through their academy. Currently, the Frenchman plays with Lille B, acting as their starting goalie in the UEFA Youth League.
The Frenchman starts with fair statistics, with 62 reflexes and 62 kicking. However, Chevalier’s GK handling (58), reactions (59) and GK positioning (58) are a modest starting point.
Chevalier is a player suited to being bought and then sent back out on loan for playing time if you already have a definitive number one. He is a development project keeper, but when developed correctly, his overall rating could increase by upwards of 20 points.
Christian Früchtl (OVR 66 – POT 83)
Team: FC Bayern Munich
Best Position: GK
Age: 19
Overall/Potential: 66 OVR / 83 POT
Value (Release Clause): £1 million (£2.2 million)
Wage: £600 per week
Best Attributes: 69 GK Reflexes, 69 GK Diving, 67 GK Kicking
Bayern Munich have a long list of active goalkeepers on their books, with yet another potentially breaking through. With Manuel Neuer, Sven Ulriech, and, as of next season, Alexander Nübel, Christian Früchtl will likely be looking for regular playing time elsewhere.
Früchtl has played almost every game this season for the second team in 3. Liga: the German was vital in their promotion campaign last season.
In FIFA 20, Früchtl has an excellent starting point and is tied as the best in GK reflexes (69) while ranking as the best in GK diving (69). He also has solid ball-handling skills with a 67 for GK kicking and a 66 for GK handling.
The German is one of the best options on our list and with a release clause of £2.2 million, he is an excellent investment in Career Mode.
Jakub Markovič (OVR 67 – POT 82)
Team: SK Slavia Praha
Best Position: GK
Age: 17
Overall/Potential: 67 OVR / 82 POT
Value (Release Clause): £425,000 (£3.3 million)
Wage: £450 per week
Best Attributes: 69 GK Reflexes, 69 GK Kicking, 69 GK Handling
The goalkeeper who has the best starting point on our list is SK Slavia Praha’s Jakub Markovič. The former Czech U18 shot-stopper has regularly featured for the Slavia Praha B side, making eight appearances and conceding 13 goals.
Like several players on this list, Markovič has featured in the UEFA Youth League, in which he’s made four appearances, conceded 11, but has kept a clean sheet.
Markovič has a similar starting point to Früchtl with 69 GK reflexes, but has better GK kicking and GK handling at 69 apiece. What Markovič also has, which the others on the list don’t have, is good acceleration (61), making him quick off his line during play; Markovič has the rushes out of goal trait.
The Czech’s release clause of £3.3 million may scare some players away from signing the Slavia Praha product.
Gavin Bazunu (OVR 59 – POT 82)
Team: Manchester City
Best Position: GK
Age: 17
Overall/Potential: 59 OVR / 82 POT
Value (Release Clause): £250,000 (£705K)
Wage: £450 per week
Best Attributes: 65 Jumping, 60 GK Reflexes, 60 GK Diving
For someone who wants the challenge of a low-rating goalkeeper with high potential, perhaps the Republic of Ireland U21 international and Manchester City keeper Gavin Bazunu is up your ally.
Currently playing with the U23 side, Bazunu has quickly asserted himself as the number one, making 14 appearances, conceding 23 goals, and keeping three clean sheets. Bazunu has featured throughout Manchester City’s UEFA Youth League campaign.
From where Bazunu starts, his 59 overall rating might be a turn-off for many players in FIFA 20 Career Mode. He requires a lot of training to develop, undoubtedly a long-term prospect, but Bazunu does have the best jumping stats of our top five with a 65 rating.
Players starting in EFL League One or League Two would benefit from having Bazunu, even if it’s just a loan deal.
