The full back has become a key position in recent years as teams have moved from a traditional 4-4-2 to three or five-at-the-back, in which the full-backs do as much attacking as they do defending.
The change in role has allowed right backs to be more involved at the business end of pitch, popping up with goals and assists for their team now more than ever before.
Here, we’re looking at the best of the upcoming batch of RBs in FIFA 21. These right back wonderkids look primed to fulfil the role of the new-look full-back with some time to develop in FIFA 21 Career Mode.
Choosing the best wonderkid right backs (RB) on FIFA 21
In the article below, you’ll find a full list of right back (RB) and right wing-back (RWB) wonderkids that have high potential in FIFA 21.
To appear on the list, the players have to be 21-years-old or under, play either RB or RWB as their primary role, and have a minimum potential of 81.
The potential ratings are the key to the player’s long-term success and how good they can be in Career Mode. At the top of the page, we breakdown the five best players that fit the criteria. At the foot of the article, you will find a full list of all of the best wonderkid right backs (RB) on FIFA 21.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (OVR 87 – POT 92)
Team: Liverpool
Best Position: RB
Age: 21
Overall/Potential: 87 OVR / 92 POT
Value: £103 million
Skill Moves: Three-Star
Best Attributes: 93 Crossing, 89 Long Passing, 88 Stamina
A product of Liverpool’s academy, Trent Alexander-Arnold has become a crucial player over the last four seasons. He will now look to cement himself in the national squad as he has only played for England 11 times, at the time of writing.
Alexander-Arnold is the best right back in FIFA 21, one rating point ahead of Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal. With a new feature on FIFA 21 allowing you to change a player’s position, and given Alexander-Arnold’s strong attacking stats, you have the option to move the English wonderkid further up the pitch.
His passing and stamina are what stand out. Alexander-Arnold doesn’t possess blistering pace – 77 acceleration and 83 sprint speed – but his 88 stamina will bode well throughout the course of a match.
His 93 crossing ability and 89 long passing allow him to ping the ball across the pitch and provide key passes into crucial areas.
Emerson (OVR 78 – POT 88)
Team: Real Betis
Best Position: RB, RM, RWB
Age: 21
Overall/Potential: 78 OVR / 88 POT
Value: £27 million
Skill Moves: Three-Star
Best Attributes: 80 Sprint Speed, 79 Acceleration, 79 Stamina
Brazilian-born Emerson is in the middle of his two-year loan spell at Real Betis from Barcelona – who he will move back to next summer once his loan ends.
Last season for Betis, Emerson assisted six goals and scored three himself over the course of 33 games. This was the first season that Emerson was given consistent starts and he will hope to improve on his stats this season.
Ratings-wise, none of Emerson’s numbers really stand out above the rest: he is a very balanced player. Defensively, he has a 79 standing tackle and 78 sliding tackle. At the other end of pitch, he has 77 shot power, 75 crossing, and 73 curve.
Jeremie Frimpong (OVR 70 – POT 86)
Team: Celtic
Best Position: RB, RWB
Age: 19
Overall/Potential: 70 OVR / 86 POT
Value: £3.6 million
Skill Moves: Three-Star
Best Attributes: 92 Acceleration, 89 Sprint Speed, 89 Balance
Jeremie Frimpong joined current club Celtic from Manchester City’s youth team last summer for a fee just shy of £350,000. Since moving to the Scottish giants, he had intermittent starts, but looks to have cemented his place in the team this season.
What is notable when watching Frimpong play is his pace, which is reflected on FIFA 21. Frimpong has 92 acceleration to go along with his 89 sprint speed. He also boasts extremely agility (88) and has great balance (89).
Rated 70 OVR, Frimpong may be a longer-term acquisition for a top club. As a 19-year-old, he is certainly one for the future, and should you be patient with him, he will reward you by developing into his 86 POT.
Sergiño Dest (OVR 75 – POT 86)
Team: Ajax / FC Barcelona
Best Position: RB
Age: 19
Overall/Potential: 75 OVR / 86 POT
Value: £10.5 million
Skill Moves: Four-Star
Best Attributes: 88 Acceleration, 87 Agility, 86 Sprint Speed
Hailing from Ajax’s famous youth academy, Sergiño Dest has recently moved from the Dutch giants to Barcelona for a fee of around £20 million.
Just 19-years-old, Dest has now started his professional career and has already shown that he can play on either side of the pitch as either a right or a left back. The American has even played in wide positions further up the pitch for Ajax.
Dest is a fast player with 88 acceleration and 86 sprint speed, and is adequate with the ball at his feet, boasting 80 dribbling and 77 ball control.
At 75 OVR with 86 POT, he could become a set-and-forget player for a mid-table club in one of Europe’s top leagues.
Reece James (OVR 77 – POT 86)
Team: Chelsea
Best Position: RB, CDM
Age: 20
Overall/Potential: 77 OVR / 86 POT
Value: £20 million
Skill Movies: Three-Star
Best Attributes: 81 Crossing, 81 Sprint Speed, 78 Strength
Bar a short spell at Wigan Athletic, Reece James has spent his whole footballing career at Chelsea, coming through their youth system and now playing for their first-team. Last season, James returned from his loan spell with Wigan in the Championship and became a key part of Chelsea’s line-up.
With Chelsea’s big spend this summer, manager Frank Lampard will be working out how to incorporate his new signings. Even though they didn’t sign a right back, James will be going all-out to try to cement his starting place beyond doubt.
Full backs are not usually known for their physicality, but James already has 78 strength. He also has 81 crossing to going along with workable defensive ratings of 77 standing tackle, 73 sliding tackle, and 71 defensive awareness.
