Even though football is the most widely played sport in the world, the ‘beautiful game’ has not had quite the same impact in the USA and Canada. Instead, American football and other sports such as basketball and baseball have dominated.
However, football has become increasingly popular and, while Canada have only reached the World Cup once – in 1986 when they lost all three group-stage games – the USA have qualified regularly and reached the quarter-finals in 2002.
The future looks bright for both countries, with players looking to surpass their national footballing idols’ previous achievements. The likes of Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, and Tim Howard in the USA and Fernando Aguiar, Daniel Fernandes, and Atiba Hutchinson in Canada having paved the way for a new generation of talent.
Choosing FIFA 21 Career Mode’s best American and Canadian Wonderkids
Potential reigns supreme when seeking the best wonderkids for your Career Mode, with long-term development more important than short-term success.
As a result, the players in this article have been sorted by their potential ratings, only including players who are 23-years-old or younger with a minimum potential rating of 80.
In the main body of this article, you will find an in-depth assessment of the five players with the highest potential rating. For a full list of all of the best American and Canadian wonderkids, see the table at the end of this piece.
Alphonso Davies (81 OVR – 89 POT)
Team: Bayern Munich
Best Position: LB, LM, RM
Overall/Potential: 81 OVR / 89 POT
Value: £47.5 million
Skill Moves: Four-Star
Best Attributes: 96 Acceleration, 96 Sprint Speed, 85 Dribbling
Alphonso Davies did not face an easy path to the top. He was born in a refugee camp in Ghana to parents fleeing a civil war in their homeland of Liberia. However, he and his family were able to move to Canada, and it was there that Davies’ career took off.
He began by playing for the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS, but he moved to German giants Bayer Munich in 2019. He has since cemented his position in the first-team, playing 29 times in the Bundesliga last season, scoring three goals and providing four assists.
The Canadian also played an important role in his side’s march to the Champions League title. Internationally, Davies has already played for Canada on 17 occasions, scoring five goals for his country, despite only gaining citizenship in 2017.
Davies is lightning quick with 96 acceleration and 96 sprint speed in FIFA 21, as well as being nimble, thanks to his 85 agility and 82 balance. However, there is room for improvement for Davies and, except for his 85 dribbling, none of his other attributes are over 80.
Still only 19-years-old at the start of Career Mode, Davies has time on his side. He also has several attributes that are close to 80, including 77 short passing, 77 aggression, 77 defensive awareness, 77 standing tackle, 79 sliding tackle, 77 jumping, and 79 stamina. As a result, Davies could quickly establish himself as an elite player.
Jonathan David (77 OVR – 88 POT)
Team: LOSC Lille
Best Position: ST, CF, CAM
Overall/Potential: 77 OVR / 88 POT
Value: £21 million
Weak Foot: Five-Star
Best Attributes: 87 Sprint Speed, 84 Jumping, 83 Composure
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Jonathan David moved to Canada when he was six-years-old. He began his career there, playing for several teams in Ottawa before moving to Belgium to join KAA Gent. Then, in the summer of 2020, David joined Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille after scoring 18 goals in 27 games for Gent last season.
At 20-years-old, David has already played for Canada 12 times, scoring an impressive 11 goals. That already makes him Canada’s eighth-highest goalscorer, so David will surely have his eye on breaking the all-time record.
The forward is an athletic force on FIFA 21 with 82 acceleration, 87 sprint speed, 84 jumping, and 83 stamina. His prowess in front of goal is also impressive, with 81 finishing and a remarkable 83 composure, ensuring that he will bury most chances that come his way.
The Canadian also has a high attacking and defensive work rate. Other areas of David’s game do need improvement, but thanks to the development feature on Career Mode, you will be able to decide exactly what sort of player David becomes.
Giovanni Reyna (70 OVR – 87 POT)
Team: Borussia Dortmund
Best Position: LM, CAM
Overall/Potential: 70 OVR / 87 POT
Value: £3.6 million
Skill Moves: Four-Star
Best Attributes: 84 Agility, 80 Balance, 78 Dribbling
Though Reyna was born in Sunderland, where his father used to play, he grew up in New York, playing academy football there before moving to Borussia Dortmund in Germany.
Still just 17-years-old, Reyna made his senior debut for Dortmund in January 2020, scoring his first goal one month later. That made him the youngest American to ever play in the Bundesliga, and it is not hard to see why Dortmund included him from such a young age.
Reyna has a solid all-round game in FIFA 21, with his 84 agility complemented by 78 acceleration, 76 sprint speed, 80 balance, 78 dribbling, 75 curve, 76 ball control, and 75 short passing. There is also ample scope to improve Reyna thanks to his 87 overall potential.
Reyna is a raw talent, and although he will most likely not be ready for regular first-team action immediately, he is a long-term investment worth buying early in your Career Mode.
Christian Pulisic (81 OVR – 87 POT)
Best Position: LW, RW, LM
Overall/Potential: 81 OVR / 87 POT
Value: £37 million
Skill Moves: Four-Star
Best Attributes: 91 Acceleration, 87 Sprint Speed, 87 Agility
Christian Pulisic moved to Europe to join Borussia Dortmund when he was 16-years-old, climbing through the ranks at BVB before making his senior debut in January 2016. He enjoyed a successful spell at Dortmund, playing 127 times and scoring 26 goals for the Black and Yellows.
That earned him a big-money move to Chelsea in 2019, for a fee of £57.6 million – although, he was initially loaned back to Dortmund. Pulisic has also played 34 times for his country, scoring 14 goals while playing as a winger and through the middle.
The American has all of the ingredients needed to become a lethal winger in Career Mode. He has plenty of pace, with 91 acceleration and 87 sprint speed, while his 87 agility, 86 balance, 83 ball control, and 79 reactions are also impressive.
Sergiño Dest (OVR 75 – POT 86)
Team: FC Barcelona
Best Position: RB
Overall/Potential: 75 OVR / 86 POT
Value: £10.5 million
Skill Moves: Four-Star
Best Attributes: 88 Acceleration, 87 Agility, 86 Sprint Speed
After making his way through Ajax’s illustrious youth system, Sergiño Dest broke into the Amsterdam-based club’s first-team in September 2019. FC Barcelona then came knocking, snapping up the young defender in the 2020 summer transfer window.
Dest predominantly plays as a right back, but has also played as a left back, making him a versatile option. That versatility has seen him capped by the USA, despite Dest having the chance to play for the Netherlands.
Agile and fast, the highlights of Dest’s ratings sheet are his 88 acceleration, 86 sprint speed, and 87 agility. He also has 82 dribbling, 78 stamina, 78 balance, and 77 ball control. However, while the high attacking work rate reflects the Dutch-American’s adventurous nature, his low defensive work rate is a concern.
