Whilst the tallest goalkeepers are not always the hardest to beat, goalkeepers do tend to be amongst the tallest players in the game. Their height allows them to reach further in the goal, dominate their box more easily and should prevent them being lobbed.
With the goalkeeping position amongst the most important, and unquestionably the most specialised, position on the pitch, it makes sense to bring in the best ‘keeper that you can. To help you do just that, we’ve compiled a list of all the tallest goalkeepers in FIFA 21.
The sole criteria for appearing on this list is height, with only goalkeepers taller than 6’6” (198cm) included. For an in-depth look at the five tallest goalkeepers, read on, whilst a full list of ALL the tallest goalkeepers can be found in the table located at the foot of this article.
Tomáš Holý, Height: 6’9”
Team: Ipswich Town
Body Type: Normal
After spending the early years of his career bouncing between clubs in his native Czechia, Holý moved to Gillingham in 2017, where he made 91 league appearances in two years. He was then offered a new contract by the Gills, but elected instead to joined Ipswich Town in 2019.
Holý played 21 times for the Tractor Boys in League One last season, conceding 17 goals and keeping nine clean sheets. That saw him finish the year with a respectable record of conceding a goal every 111 minutes and keeping a clean sheet in 42.9% of the games he played.
At 6’9”, Holý is the tallest player on FIFA 21, giving him an inch on his nearest competition. Unfortunately, his height is the most remarkable number on his stats sheet. He does boast a solid 71 goalkeeper diving, but his other goalkeeping attributes are below 70, with 69 goalkeeper reflexes, 65 goalkeeper positioning, 60 goalkeeper handling, and 56 goalkeeper kicking.
Costel Pantilimon, Height: 6’8”
Body Type: Lean
Costel Pantilimon will be best remembered, at least in England, for his time with Manchester City. The Romanian joined the Citizens from 2011 ACS Poli Timișoara, playing seven times in the Premier League for Manchester City as well as featuring between the sticks regularly in domestic cup competitions.
He has also enjoyed stints in La Liga, the EFL Championship and is now turning out in the Süper Lig for Denizlispor, joining the Turkish side from Nottingham Forest.
Though his body type is noted as lean, Pantilimon’s best stat is his 78 strength. But all his goalkeeping stats do creep over 70, except his 67 goalkeeper diving. Unfortunately, at 33, Pantilimon’s 71 OVR will only decrease. That is something to consider before bringing the veteran Romanian to your club.
Team: Standard Liege (On loan from Torino)
Body Type: Normal
The younger brother of the highly rated Napoli midfielder Sergej Milinković -Savić, the 23-year-old Vanja was once on the books at Manchester United, having joined the Premier League heavyweights from Serbian side Vojvodina.
However, he was refused a work permit and so was released by United, instead joining Poland’s Lechia Gdańsk for one season before signing for Serie A’s Torino in 2017. However, he has failed to break into the first team in Turin, making just one league appearance in three years.
He is currently on loan at Standard Liège, where he will surely be hoping for more regular game time. Concerningly, the tall Serbian has played just 67 games since the start of the 2014/15 season, nearly half of which game in the space of a single season in the Polish first division.
Milinković-Savić’s distribution is his best asset on FIFA 21 with the 23-year-old possessing a 78 goalkeeper kicking rating as well as the goalkeeper long throw trait. But, except his 73 strength, none of his other stats are over 70.
Demba Thiam, Height 6’8”
Body Type: Lean
Demba Thiam has plenty of height, with the Senegalese shot-stopper standing 6’8” tall. Unfortunately, he is rather short on experience. He has played only twice in the league for his current side, S.P.A.L., with his only run of games so far in his career coming in Serie C whilst he was playing at Alma Juventus Fano 1906 on loan.
Of course, at only 22, Thiam’s are still ahead of him, but without playing first team football his progress will almost certainly stall. His stats, unsurprisingly, will not blow you away.
At 53 OVR, Thiam is not ready to play at the highest-level and his attributes reflect that. His best stats are his 62 strength, 62 goalkeeper kicking, and 61 goalkeeper positioning whilst on the other end of the spectrum he has 2 positioning and 6 finishing. He certainly won’t be following former England number one David James and playing up front.
Kjell Scherpen, Height 6’8”
Body Type: Normal
Kjell Scherpen joined AFC Ajax last summer, having worked his way through FC Emmen’s youth system before making 35 league appearances for his boyhood club. The tall Dutchman, who has represented Holland at U-19 level, has not yet played for Ajax in the Eredivisie, but did make nine appearances for Jong Ajax in the Dutch second division.
Still only 20-years-old, Scherpen has his whole career ahead of him as he looks to establish himself in the professional game and that is reflected in his potential. He could ultimately achieve an 81 OVR rating, which would make him a viable long-term option for your career mode.
Currently, however, there is much to work on his game. Scherpen has 69 strength to go along with 69 goalkeeper reflexes, 67 goalkeeper diving, 66 goalkeeper handling, 66 goalkeeper positioning, and 64 goalkeeper kicking. All could be improved through consistent work on the training pitch.
